St. John's enters March Madness with high hopes, and for good reason.
The Red Storm have been one of the stories of college basketball this season, with legendary head coach Rick Pitino leading the red resurgence to bring New York City basketball back to the national stage.
In less than two seasons under Pitino, St. John's went from a non-tournament team to a No. 2 seed expected to make a deep tournament run. The Red Storm went 30-4 this year, including an 18-2 record in the Big East capped by a conference tournament title, and finished as the No. 6 team in the nation. Their calling card was their defense and rebounding, and Pitino's squad finished among the best in Division I in those categories.
Entering this season, St. John's had not won a men's NCAA Tournament game since 2015 and made just two appearances in the dance since 2011.
Standing in their way of a first tourney triumph since 2015 is No. 15 seed Omaha out of the Summit League. Led by forward Marquel Sutton (19.1 PPG, 8 RPG), the Mavericks went 22-12 and swept the floor in the conference tourney to earn an automatic bid.
2025 marks the first men's NCAA Tournament appearance for Omaha, who have been a Division I program for just over a decade.
St. John's vs. Omaha will air on CBS, with streaming available on Paramount+.
