Three-time winners USA take on Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals on Thursday, and the reigning champions look ready to prevail in this matchup at SoFi Stadium in California.
No other side has lifted the Nations League trophy since its inception in 2021 and Mauricio Pochettino, a big-name managerial appointment last year, will be eager to ensure that remains the case.
They first must overcome Panama to book a place in the final against either Canada or Mexico. That should be no issue for a side possessing the talent they boast, with a win on the cards against the out-of-form Canal Men.
The Pochettino era with the USA began with a 2-0 win over Panama and it would be no surprise to see a similar result play out when the two sides meet in California for their Nations League semifinal on Thursday.
The USMNT has won five of their six matches under the Argentinian and the quality throughout their squad is far greater than anything their CONCACAF rivals can provide.
Josh Sargent is back in the squad and, along with elite players such as Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah and Timothy Weah, can help the USA overpower Panama at the SoFi Stadium.
However, it is at the other end where they could impress most. The absence of Serginio Dest at right-back means there should be a more balanced look to the USMNT backline thanks to the presence of Borussia Monchengladbach’s Joe Scally and they can shut out Panama while recording a victory.
With Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun ruled out through injury, Sargent should lead the line on Thursday and the USMNT forward can mark the occasion with a goal.
Sargent has found form since returning from injury, netting eight goals in as many games for Norwich, and the USA hitman could get plenty of chances against a Panama side which has struggled to keep things tight at the back of late.
The Canal Men have shipped 15 goals in their last five away matches and were thrashed 6-1 by Chile in their most recent outing, suggesting Sargent has a great opportunity to notch a first USMNT goal since 2019 at the SoFi Stadium.
As if Panama’s defensive woes weren’t already bad enough, they are battling injuries and suspension in defense too.
Marseille’s Michael Murillo and LASK’s Andres Andrade have been ruled out through injury and key centre-back Fidel Escobar is suspended for Thursday’s trip to California.
Those absences for an already shaky defense could open the door for not only USA’s attackers to cause damage, but for some unlikely sources of goals to get in on the act too.
Fulham defender Antonee Robinson has enjoyed an excellent season in the Premier League, providing 10 assists for the Cottagers, and his tendency to fly forward from left-back could be seen to great effect on Thursday.
For a defender, Robinson’s return of four goals from 50 caps is respectable enough, and given his form and electric pace, his price to find the net looks too big to ignore against a Panama rearguard that could prove easy to play through.
