The United States Women's National Team continues its quest for a fifth gold medal in Olympic soccer against Japan in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning.

The U.S., playing its first major tournament under former Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, won all three of their matches in Group B to top their section, while Japan progressed as runners-up to world champions Spain in Group C.

The sides will now clash at Paris' Parc des Princes for a spot in the semifinals, in which the winners will face either Canada or Germany.

It was clear something had to be done after the USA crashed out in only the last 16 of the 2023 Women's World Cup.

Not only had the Stars and Stripes won just one of their three group games in that tournament but their performances were flat and largely uninspiring.

Step forward Emma Hayes.

Since the former Chelsea boss took charge earlier this year, the USA have looked rejuvenated and that transformation has taken centre stage at this Olympics.

They breezed through the group stage, winning all of their matches and scoring nine goals in the process, with the 4-1 thrashing of Germany on matchday two a highlight.

They are playing possession-based soccer again and they look like the real deal under Hayes.

The USA should be too strong for Japan in the quarterfinals but to squeeze more value out of the prices, bettors should back the USA to win and both teams to score.

Despite their excellence going forwards, the USA have still looked a little uncertain in defence and have conceded in two of their three games at this Olympics, so do not be surprised if Japan Women get on the scoresheet.

The USA Women are blessed with quality options going forwards and Smith has arguably embodied everything good about this team under the stewardship of Hayes.

Mallory Swanson has struck three goals so far in this tournament but Smith has bagged two, scoring a brace against Germany in Marseille.

She opened the scoring in the game, led from the front and showed just how dangerous she can be for her country, so expect another strong performance when the pressure is on in the quarterfinals. 

Smith has been excellent domestically this season, scoring 10 goals in the 2024 National Women's Soccer League for her club Portland Thorns.

At just 23 years of age, she could be the future of the USWNT and she looks overpriced to score at +140.
