The first CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup kicks off on Tuesday, and the United States Women's National Team will be the hottest of favorites to start their campaign with a win when they take on Dominican Republic in their first group game.

Their opponents have already come through seven games to gain their place in the 12-team tournament, beating Guyana 1-0 in a playoff.

USWNT vs. Dominican Republic Prediction

The USA will be expected to go all the way and win the first-ever CONCACAF W Gold Cup, and Dominican Republic will be under no illusions as to the scale of the task they face in their Group A opener in Carson, California on Tuesday.

Only World Cup winners Spain ranks higher in the world than the USA while its first opponents are 107th in FIFA's list.

Dominican Republic gained its place in the 12-team tournament with a 1-0 playoff win over Guyana which saw them join the USA, Mexico and Argentina in the first pool, with Kat Gonzalez scoring the vital goal.

But the only previous meeting between the two teams was an Olympic qualifier in 2012 when the USWNT claimed a 14-0 win which was the largest in the team’s history.

The USA tends to dominate regional opposition and it would be a huge achievement for the Dominican Republic to find the net at the Dignity Health Sports Park after getting the better of Bermuda, Barbados, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Jazmin Jackson scored four goals in the pre-qualifying tournament for the Dominicans. Twelve of the 23-woman Dominican Republic roster play their football in the US for club or college teams.

It will be a big task to contain the Americans, even though some of the established names will not be at the tournament. The USWNT is undergoing something of a youth movement after crashing out in the round of 16 in the 2023 Women's World Cup.

Julie Ertz and Megan Rapinoe have retired while Kelley O'Hara, Kristie Mewis, Aubrey Kingsbury, Andi Sullivan, Sofia Huerta, and Savannah DeMelo are players from the World Cup squad who weren't called up for the Gold Cup. Striker Alex Morgan was not initially called up, but she was brought in as a replacement for Mia Fishel who suffered a torn ACL right before the tournament.

Among the less familiar faces in the Gold Cup squad are reigning NWSL Rookie of the Year Jenna Nighswonger, 20-year-old PSG midfielder Korbin Albert, Portland Thorns playmaker and 2023 NWSL MVP finalist Sam Coffey, and 2023 NWSL Championship MVP Midge Purce, who missed out on the World Cup due to injury.

USWNT team news

Interim coach Twila Kilgore is taking the opportunity to see how some younger players can make a big impression in the tournament with one eye on the Paris Olympics later this year.

Jaedyn Shaw will get the chance to impress up top. In midfield, 20-year-old Korbin Albert and 18-year-old Olivia Moultrie should get time to pull the strings. Mia Fishel would have partnered with Shaw up front, but her knee injury means Alex Morgan was called in.

Center back Alana Cook has been ruled out with a knee injury so experienced defender Becky Sauerbrunn has come into the roster.

Dominican Republic team news

The Dominican Republic look set to stick with the team who earned their place in the tournament, including captain Lucia Leon, who previously appeared for Tottenham and now plays her football for Watford, who play in the second tier of the English game.
