St. Louis City’s third season in MLS has taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks, with the club losing three straight games without scoring.
The hosts are aiming to turn around that alarming slide against a Columbus Crew outfit that have climbed up to third after consecutive victories.
This is the first MLS encounter between these two sides, although they did cross paths in the 2023 Leagues Cup. Columbus Crew won 2-1 on that day and they are narrow favorites for Sunday’s visit to Energizer Park.
The visitors have made an unbeaten start to the MLS campaign and head into this clash looking for a third win in a row, having overcome DC United and CF Montreal.
Columbus have also been in sold form on the road, winning two of their last three away games in the league, although they were fortunate to escape with a point against MLS debutants San Diego FC.
The Crew finished second last term and this impressive finish was largely built on strong results against the league’s weakest teams, as they won 10 and drew once in the 11 fixtures they played against the eight worst-performing sides.
While they didn’t meet St Louis City, the hosts were part of that bottom eight. They were third-bottom in the Western Conference last term, winning just eight of 34 matches.
In their clashes with the seven sides that recorded 57 points or more last term, St Louis City lost six of 10 encounters.
Not only are the hosts in poor form, but they’ve also got a poor record against the strongest sides in MLS. With the Crew on course for another strong campaign, they’re good value for the points in this trip.
Diego Rossi and Jacen Russell-Rowe have scored seven of Columbus's 10 goals so far, but Mohamed Farsi has been a threat without showing up on the scoresheet. The Canadian has tended to feature as a wing-back for the Crew this term, but he’s still getting into good positions.
Farsi is the only other player outside of their two top scorers to generate over 1.0 Expected Goals this term. That’s despite the Canadian missing two games in March. He returned to the side for the win over Montreal and once again looked like a problem.
Farsi, who scored four MLS goals last season, has had a shot at goal in each of his last three games and he’s recorded a shot on target in three of his last four appearances.
St. Louis have scored just four MLS goals this term, while they’ve failed to score in two of their first three home games of the campaign.
Columbus Crew have only managed one win by a two-goal margin this term, but they look well-placed to hand out a comprehensive defeat.
Those 11 games the visitors played against the league’s weakest sides last season saw them score twice or more on 11 occasions, so back a 2-0 away win at +1200.
