MLS teams dominate the Leagues Cup quarterfinal lineup, and the Seattle Sounders take on Los Angeles FC in what looks like an intriguing last-eight clash.
There were a number of surprises in the Leagues Cup round of 16, including Inter Miami being dumped out by Columbus Crew.
Los Angeles were dominant winners over San Jose in the last round, beating San Jose 4-1, and they have been in good form all season.
The Black and Gold are just two points behind rivals LA Galaxy in the Western Conference with two games in hand over their rivals.
They are also among the top-scorers and one of the best defensive records in the West, scoring 48 and conceding 30 in 24 MLS games.
They did lose a penalty shootout to Vancouver in the group stages, but aside from that have carried their league form into this cup competition.
Steve Cherundolo’s men beat Austin 2-0 before their win over San Jose and have one of the most talented squads in the competition with the likes of Hugo Loris, Denis Bouanga and Cristian Olivera all legitimate stars.
They will also be boosted by the addition of World Cup winner Olivier Giroud, who can significantly bolster their already impressive attacking options.
LAFC also have a serious advantage in the head-to-head record between them and the Sounders, winning the last four meetings between the two teams.
They are unbeaten in their last eight games against the Sounders and were 3-0 winners on the road in last month’s MLS meeting between the pair.
The Sounders have performed better in the Leagues Cup than they have in the MLS, beating LA Galaxy 3-1 before putting four past Pumas.
However, Los Angeles are a big step up on those opponents and they look hard to beat, particularly given their record against the Sounders.
Seattle also lost 3-1 to Necaxa in the group stages and have lost three more MLS games than these opponents this season.
Take LAFC to win this all-MLS quarterfinal at +155.
One staple of Los Angeles’ games this season has been high-scoring affairs and the same looks likely when they meet Seattle in this one.
The Sounders last three games have all gone over 3.5 goals and they face one of the most formidable attacking units in the MLS.
Only Cristian Arango has scored more goals than Bouanga in the league this season and he netted twice in LA’s 4-1 win over San Jose last time out.
To add to that, the road team’s new signing Giroud made his debut in that game and is one of the most respected goalscorers in recent football history, with 57 goals in 137 games for France.
Seattle are no slouches going forward, as shown by the fact that they have scored 10 goals in four Leagues Cups games this term, and they should be able to contribute to what should be a high-scoring game.
Take over 3.5 goals between these top level MLS teams at +120.
Los Angeles already had an impressive squad, but they have further bolstered it with the signing of Giroud this summer.
The former France forward played for his nation at Euro 2024, delaying his debut for his new team, but he featured from the bench against San Jose in the last round of this cup and may well start this clash.
Giroud showed that he is still a class player despite his age last season, scoring 15 goals in 35 Serie A appearances for Milan and in total he has scored over 250 goals in his career.
The forward can hit the ground running for LAFC and is fancied at +200 to get on the scoresheet.
