San Diego FC have been a breath of fresh air in their first campaign in the MLS and they can be a match for Columbus Crew when the two sides meet at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday.
Few would have expected San Diego to hit the ground running as they have, with the California outfit unbeaten after their first three games with two wins and a draw.
Making their presence known with a 2-0 win at LA Galaxy in their very first MLS game, head coach Mikey Varas saw his side play out a goalless draw at home to St. Louis City before an impressive 3-1 win at Real Salt Lake.
Saturday’s opponent has also enjoyed a positive start, with Columbus also picking up seven points from their first three league outings of the season.
After winning 4-2 at home to Chicago Fire in their opening game and 1-0 at New England Revolution, the Crew were held to a goalless draw by Houston Dynamo at Lower.com Field last time out.
These two attacking teams have had similar starts to the season, and there might well be nothing to choose from between San Diego and Columbus come the full-time whistle on Saturday.
Both teams will want to maintain their unbeaten starts to the MLS campaign and Saturday’s showdown in California might well end in a stalemate.
But rest assured, a goalless bore draw is unlikely to be on the cards, given the attacking intent both these sides have shown in the first few weeks of the season.
With 11 goals scored between the two teams, there should be plenty of opportunities created at Snapdragon Stadium this weekend and a scoring draw appeals here.
Jacen Russell-Rowe has enjoyed an electric start to the season and the 22-year-old forward is certainly a player to keep an eye on in the anytime goalscorer market.
The Canadian international scored the first goal of the season for Columbus in their win over Chicago as well as the decisive goal in the 1-0 win at New England.
A youngster who is playing with maturity beyond his years, Russell-Rowe looks to be enjoying his soccer and he might well add another goal to his growing tally on Saturday at San Diego.
Another striker enjoying a positive start to the MLS campaign is San Diego’s Danish forward Marcus Invartsen.
The former Mainz and Nordsjaelland forward, who also had spells at Genk and Union Berlin, has taken on a new challenge in the United States, after signing a three-year deal through to 2027.
It looks like Ingvartsen could be the perfect fit at San Diego, as the 29-year-old has already found the back of the net in the victory over Real Salt Lake last time out.
On the back of that goal-scoring display, Scandinavian star Ingvartsen is another player who appeals in the anytime goalscorer market in this one.
