Romania look set to provide a stiff last-16 test for Netherlands at Euro 2024, but the Dutch are still expected to edge through to the quarterfinals.
Ronald Koeman's side won one, drew one and lost one in the group and have yet to hit the heights in Germany, but they should be good enough to see off a Romania outfit that also picked up four points during the group stage.
The Dutch were viewed as candidates to go far at Euro 2024 before a ball was kicked in Germany and they have safely negotiated a tough group, which included France, Austria and Poland, finishing third with four points on the board.
Netherlands impressed in spells when coming from behind to beat Poland 2-1 in their opener, as a deflected Cody Gakpo goal and late Wout Weghorst strike got them off to a winning start, before they dug in to earn a vital point against France.
They were poor and particularly sloppy at the back when deservedly going down 3-2 to Austria, but that result means they have a real opportunity to make the last eight as they take on Romania, who surprisingly finished top of Group E, in the first knockout round.
Romania were ruthless when they beat Ukraine 3-0 in their first match but were second best when losing 2-0 to Belgium before a final 1-1 draw with Slovakia sealed their progress.
All four teams in Group E finished with four points, but Edward Iordanescu's men came top due to their superior goals scored record and they can certainly test the Dutch in Munich.
However, Koeman's squad looks to have a bit more quality and they should make the quarter-finals, although it may require a a strong second-half showing.
Netherlands have been level at half-time in two of their three games and it could be even again at the break before they assert their authority on this last-16 tie.
Gakpo has been one of the Netherlands' brightest performers in Germany so far, with the Liverpool forward scoring against both Poland and Austria.
The 25-year-old clearly enjoys tournament football as he also scored three times for his country in the 2022 World Cup and he will be keen to add to his tally against Romania to stay in contention for the Golden Boot.
Gakpo has scored twice from just six attempts in Germany, with four of his total shots so far being on target, and he can again inspire Koeman's side as they seek a last-eight spot.
Jeremie Frimpong enjoyed a fine club season for Bayer Leverkusen in 2023-24, helping them win a league and cup double as the winger weighed in with 14 goals and 12 assists in all competitions.
Frimpong came off the bench for the final 10 minutes against Poland, then started the big second group game versus France, before being left on the bench for the entirety of the Austria defeat.
However, he did catch the eye in his solitary start in the tournament so far, as the 23-year-old had two shots, one of which was on target, against France.
Frimpong is tipped to return to the XI for the Romania tie as Koeman plays his strongest side again and the winger will not be shot-shy as he looks to make a real mark on the competition.
