Week 11 of the MLS season is in the books, and the latest round of action really shifted the standings around in a tight Western Conference.
In the East, Inter Miami continue to lead the way, but some in-form sides are giving them chase. Let’s take a look at where every team stands in the latest edition of our power rankings.
W7 D3 L2, 1st Eastern Conference
Inter Miami thumped the New York Red Bulls 6-2 - despite trailing 1-0 at halftime - over the weekend in an impressive display. That was a fourth win on the spin for the Eastern Conference leaders, netting 16 goals in that run.
W6 D3 L2, 1st Western Conference
In the West, Real Salt Lake stayed out in front with a third-straight win. A 1-0 victory over out-of-sorts Sporting KC is far from the biggest result of their campaign, but it extended a seven-game unbeaten run.
W6 D2 L2, 2nd Western Conference
Minnesota United are just a point shy of top spot in the West following a three-game winning streak. They’ve impressively bounced back from defeats against Houston Dynamo and Philadelphia Union to jump into second, despite star playmaker Emanuel Reynoso playing just 31 minutes so far this season.
Having played a game fewer than Real Salt Lake, Minnesota United have the best points-per-game ratio in the West, but there’s very little between the teams.
W6 D3 L2, 2nd Eastern Conference
Cincinnati are giving chase to Inter Miami in the East, they are another side on a three-game winning streak in MLS, taking them to six victories for the campaign.
Cincinnati have picked up vital wins at Atlanta United and Orlando City, and they’ve really impressed away from home with four wins from six road games.
W6 D1 L4, 3rd Eastern Conference
Toronto FC are enjoying a great season under John Herdman, putting last season’s struggles behind them. With three consecutive wins, TFC have moved within five points of Inter Miami.
Given that Toronto were rooted to the bottom of the East alongside a Messi-less Miami last season, their turnaround is remarkable.
W5 D3 L3, 5th Western Conference
Outside of the leaders in the two conferences, no team has accumulated more points across the last six games than Colorado Rapids. They’ve won four from six, scoring 13 times in that stretch, and so far their reuslts have justified their offseason rebuild.
W5 D4 D2, 3rd Western Conference
LA Galaxy’s form has tailed off a little, but they remain towards the top of the Western Conference. The Galaxy have failed to win or score in their last couple of matches, but they’re not far removed from putting three goals past the Vancouver Whitecaps and four goals past the San Jose Earthquakes in recent victories.
W5, D3 L2, 4th Western Conference
The Whitecaps look capable of a solid season this term, having lost only once in their last six matches. They’ll certainly rue their two home defeats at this early stage, especially as they’re just three points off top spot, but the Brian White-Ryan Gauld-Fabrice Picault trio in front of a rotation-heavy midfield has worked well.
W4, D4, L3, 6th Western Conference
Austin are in flying form and that’s lifted them into the top six, which is a bit of a surprise given their lack of offseason movement. They’ve won four of their last six matches and with three clean sheets in a row, there’s clearly a strong foundation to build upon.
W4 D2 L5, 7th Eastern Conference
New York City may have lost last time out, but they’ve picked up three wins from their previous four games to sit inside the playoff spots. City need to improve their away record, but their recent strong homestand suggests they can make the postseason.
W4 D5 L2, 4th Eastern Conference
This might be a low ranking for the side fourth in the East, but the Red Bulls are winless in four after this past weekend's heavy loss to Inter Miami. If this slide continues, they risk falling out of the playoff spots altogether given they’re currently just three points clear of ninth.
W3 D5 L2, 8th Eastern Conference
The Union are in poor form, which puts their playoff chances at risk. They’ve gone four games without a victory and they’ve suffered defeats at home to Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders in that stretch.
W3 D5 L3, 9th Eastern Conference
DC allowed a 2-0 lead to slip against Philadelphia at the weekend, leaving them ninth in the East with just one win in six.
W4 D3 L4, 7th Western Conference
Los Angeles FC are on the bubble in the West’s playoff race following a run of one victory in four games, and they have conceded at least two goals in each game in that span.
W3 D6 L1, 5th Eastern Conference
Columbus Crew have enjoyed an impressive campaign, suffering only one defeat across 10 matches this season. That consistency has put them on course for a playoff spot, but they simply don’t win enough games to feature any higher.
The Crew are winless in their last six and they need to start turning draws into victories in order to avoid slipping down the standings.
