Mexico and Honduras faced off in the Nations League quarterfinals last year, and El Tri triumphed on penalties after overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
Honduras will be hoping history does not repeat itself as they have a 2-0 advantage heading into the second leg of this year’s matchup.
A Luis Palma double gave Reinaldo Rueda’s Honduras team the win at home in San Pedro Sula and they will look to defend that lead in what looks set to be an intriguing clash in the Nations League last eight.
Mexico suffered their first defeat of manager Javier Aguirre’s third stint as national team boss when falling 2-0 to Honduras in the first leg of this quarterfinal.
However, they have never lost a Nations League match on home soil and they have not gone winless in back-to-back games against teams from Central America since September 2017.
El Tri have also reached at least the semifinals of every CONCACAF tournament since they departed at the quarterfinal stage of the 2005 Gold Cup so they will fancy their chances of overturning this deficit.
The 2-0 loss in the first leg should certainly act as a wake up call for this Mexico side, as they look to once again overturn a deficit against Honduras.
They have beaten Honduras in five of the last seven meetings and all of those wins came with a clean sheet.
The two goals that Mexico conceded in the first leg were also the first that they have let in during Aguirre’s third spell in charge.
Honduras celebrated wildly after the first win over this Mexican team but have generally struggled recently when facing top-level opponents, losing to Jamaica, Ecuador and Costa Rica in the last 12 months.
Mexico are better than all three of those teams and should be able to bounce back with another success and a clean sheet on Tuesday night.
Four of Mexico’s last six games have produced nine or more corners and only one team had more corner kicks per 90 minutes at the latest edition of the Copa America this summer.
El Tri had a whopping 17 corners in the second leg of the Nations League clash between these two teams last year and they could rack up the corner tally once more in this game.
Raul Jimenez has been one of the most iconic players for Mexico in recent years and currently sits joint-fifth in the all-time goalscorers list for his nation with 34.
He could overtake Carlos Hermosillo with a goal in this game, which would be an impressive achievement given the amount of time that the former Wolves striker had to take out of the game after suffering a serious head injury in 2020.
Jimenez looks like he is back to his very best this season, scoring four times in the Premier League for Fulham and also netting the crucial first goal against rivals the United States during a friendly last month.
Jimenez has five goals in his last eight appearances for El Tri and is also their free kick and penalty taker, having netted a free kick against the USMNT.
That means he is likely to get more opportunities than most in this crucial quarterfinal second leg and he could add to his international goal tally as a result.
