Los Angeles FC and Colorado Rapids will meet in the semifinals of the 2024 Leagues Cup at the BMO Stadium on Wednesday night.
LAFC have been one of the dominant teams in MLS this season and they have transferred that form to the Leagues Cup.
The Black and Gold have been very successful in recent years and are now within touching distance of another trophy, as they line up against the Colorado Rapids in the semifinals of this competition.
The Rapids have managed to land a fairly easy run through the Leagues Cup so far, but that luck may now have run out as they face a tough challenge in Los Angeles.
LAFC are currently second behind rivals LA Galaxy in the Western Conference of MLS, sitting just two points behind them in the standings and holding two games in hand.
They have transferred that impressive form to this Leagues Cup campaign, winning four of their five games in the competition and scoring 14 goals in the process while conceding just three.
Steve Cherundolo’s men got the better of Club Tijuana in the group stages before tying with Vancouver and losing the subsequent penalty shootout.
However, since the knockout stages began, the Black and Gold have been rock solid, beating Austin 2-0 before recording a 4-1 success over San Jose.
They continued that into the quarterfinals where they secured a 3-0 road win against a very capable Seattle Sounders team.
Now returning to home soil it’s hard to see past LAFC, who have won nine of their 13 home games in MLS.
By contrast the Colorado Rapids have lost seven of their 13 road games and have had a fairly easy path through this competition.
They were beaten 4-0 by Portland Timbers in the group stages before a 1-1 tie with Leon, which they won on penalties.
They have earned three victories against Mexican teams in the knockout stages, beating Juarez 3-2 and Toluca 2-1 before again prevailing in a penalty shootout against Club America in the quarterfinals after a 0-0 stalemate.
LAFC are a big step up on those teams in their current form and the Rapids have lost the last six head-to-heads away to LAFC, conceding 17 goals and scoring just twice.
Colorado has one of the worst defensive records in the Western Conference, conceding 43 times in 26 MLS matches, and that is a real concern against this LAFC forward line.
The Black and Gold should make their class tell from early on, they have been leading at half-time and also winning at full-time in five of their last six games.
Take a repeat of that in this one, with LAFC to be winning after the first 45 minutes and at the end of the game.
Los Angeles FC have been the most devastating team going forward in the Leagues Cup this season, scoring 14 goals in five games.
They rank second for shots taken and first for shots on target with 34. They should be able to take full advantage of a Colorado defense that has conceded 43 times in 26 league matches.
Four of the Rapids’ last seven games in all competitions have gone over 3.5 goals and a repeat of that looks likely here.
The visitors are no pushovers going forward: Only Real Salt Lake have scored more goals in the West than Colorado's 50, but their issues at the back may be exploited.
Olivier Giroud has been limited to cameo appearances since joining LAFC but he remains a deadly striker and is worth keeping on side to score at any time.
The veteran netted 15 goals in 35 Serie A appearances for AC Milan last season and in total he has scored over 250 goals in his career.
He could add to his tally in this game at +105.
