Leicester City’s absence from the Premier League lasted just one season and Steve Cooper’s side will be hoping to get their new campaign off to a winning start when they entertain Tottenham Hotspur, who will be looking to finish in the top-four this season having failed to qualify for the Champions League last term.
We should expect class to tell between a team that has just claimed promotion back to the top flight of English football and another that has realistic ambitions to finish in the top four or claim a trophy this season.
But while Tottenham can be expected to get their season off to a winning start, don’t expect Ange Postecoglou’s team to have everything completely their own way when they travel to Leicester on Monday.
Goals look to be on the agenda as just four of Spurs’ 19 league away games last season failed to generate at least three and the same can be said of 11 of the last 14 times Leicester played in front of their own fans in the Championship last year.
The home team is likely to match the positivity of Monday’s visitors, especially as the Foxes beat Spurs 4-1 in their last meeting at the King Power Stadium, so while the Londoners' greater quality should come to the fore, both teams could still find the net in an entertaining encounter.
Tottenham has invested heavily in their strike force this summer by capturing Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth after he enjoyed an excellent season for the Cherries in which he scored 19 Premier League goals.
Spurs fans will hope the signing of Solanke will take their team to the next level and help them secure a return to the Champions League for next season, but it is easy to forget that there is already a top quality goalscorer at the club.
Heung-min Son is one of the few players still at the club who made great strides under the management of Mauricio Pochettino and the South Korean forward proved last season that he can still be a great goal threat, even at the age of 32.
Son, who is a fans' favourite at the club, scored 17 Premier League goals in Postecoglou’s first season in north London and also contributed 10 vital assists, so he can still be expected to play a huge role for Tottenham this season.
A game against Leicester should also remind him of some great memories as he has scored 10 goals in 16 league and cup games against the Foxes, and he should be relied upon to find the net again in Monday’s clash.
One player who could be in for a difficult evening is Leicester defender Jannik Vestergaard, who may have his hands full dealing with Solanke if the former Liverpool striker is handed his Spurs debut by Postecoglou.
Vestergaard was booked 13 times in Leicester’s Championship-winning season and that may not bode well for a return to the top flight, where the Foxes come up against strikers of a superior quality to those they met last season and are likely to have a lot less possession.
The 32-year-old Dane looks vulnerable in this match-up and it would not be a big surprise if he started the new season with another booking.
