LA Galaxy vs. Tigres: Picks, Predictions, Odds

LA Galaxy have reserved their best displays for the Concacaf Champions Cup and will aim to produce another against Mexican outfit Tigres UANL on Tuesday.

The reigning MLS Cup champions have endured a rough start to the campaign as Greg Vanney has struggled to recapture the chemistry of last season.

Galaxy have lost four and drawn two of their opening six regular-season matches, but were able to overturn a 1-0 deficit to beat Herediano 4-2 on aggregate to progress in this competition.

The differing levels of the Costa Rican and Mexican leagues mean Vanney’s side will expect a tough time against Tigres.

Guido Pizarro’s side slipped to fourth place in Liga MX after their 3-0 defeat at leaders Club America on Saturday, but they brushed FC Cincinnati aside with ease in the last 16 of the Concacaf Champions Cup.

LA Galaxy vs. Tigres betting picks and predictions

Both Teams to Score - Yes (-163)

Galaxy are missing a couple of key contributors from last year’s playoff run, with playmaker Riqui Puig suffering a torn ACL in the Western Conference Final win over Seattle in December and he will miss a major chunk of the season.

The team were also forced to move on star forward Dejan Joveljic because of salary cap constraints and his replacement, Christian Ramirez, has taken time to hit his stride.

But there have been signs in recent weeks that veteran striker Ramirez is finally heating up. The former Minnesota United hitman has scored in each of the Galaxy’s last three domestic games and in the 4-1 second-leg victory over Herediano in the previous round.

Vanney’s biggest concern now is probably fixing a backline that has leaked 12 goals in MLS, giving them the joint-worst defensive record in the Western Conference.

Pizarro’s problems appear to be linked to the fitness of Tigres striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, who has been a talismanic figure for the team during his time in Monterrey.

The Frenchman is unlikely to be fit for the first leg after missing a month of action because of an Achilles tendon injury.

Tigres have recently welcomed back Brazilian winger Romulo Zwarg and Uruguayan midfielder Fernando Gorriaran from injury and can still count on Argentinean striker Nicolas Ibanez for a goal when needed.

And, having scored in both legs of their last-16 clash with FC Cincinnati, they should be able to get on the board at Health Sports Park.

Both teams have scored in the Galaxy’s last four games in all competitions and that looks likely to be the case again on Tuesday.

LA Galaxy or Draw and 2-4 Goals (+375)

Despite their domestic struggles, Vanney’s side have performed well in the Concacaf Champions Cup.

Their 4-1 win over Costa Rican Apertura champions Herediano was their best display of the year so far and brought back memories of their emphatic playoff wins over Colorado Rapids and Minnesota United.

Home advantage should come into play on Tuesday and, with LA Galaxy unbeaten in their last seven home games in this competition, the California club should not lose.

It could be worth backing them to avoid defeat with a goals range bet of 2-4, which would cover a range of results from a 2-0 win to a 3-1 victory and include either a 1-1 or 2-2 draw.

LA Galaxy to Score in Both Halves (+275)

The Galaxy’s renewed potency in attack has seen them score in both halves of two of their last four matches.

Vanney’s team should create enough chances to do the same again in the home leg of this crucial quarter-final clash.

Tigres were overrun by Club America in their last domestic game, shipping goals in the 32nd, 45th and 63rd minutes.

It is never a good sign when teams concede on the stroke of half-time with defensive concentration often the main issue behind it.

The Galaxy can take advantage of any similar slip-ups by grabbing goals either side of the interval on Tuesday.
