Inter Miami continue their quest for back-to-back Leagues Cup titles on Thursday as they take on Toronto FC at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Lionel Messi remains unavailable for Inter due to an ankle injury he sustained at the Copa America with Argentina, but they have coped well in the absence of their star man and they go into the game as clear favourites.
The ongoing absence of Messi is a big concern for Inter and as it stands there is no clear timeframe on his recovery, but the Herons have been getting results in his absence with five wins and three losses since he initially linked up with Argentina earlier this summer.
One of those victories came against Thursday’s opponents as they downed Toronto 3-1 in an MLS game at this venue in mid July.
Miami do have a strong record in this fixture as they have won their last two games against Toronto by an aggregate score of 7-1 and have won all five of their fixtures against the Canadian club as the home side since they joined MLS.
Four of those wins have come by two or more goals, and Inter should be able to cover a -1 handicap on Thursday as they bid to seal a place in the last 16.
There are a few decent anytime goalscorer options for Miami and Luis Suarez is an obvious pick at -105, while Leonardo Campana could be on penalty duties and looks interesting at +105.
A little further down the betting, Matias Rojas stands out after a strong start to his time in Florida. The 28-year-old hit three goals in his first three games for the MLS side, but then put in a few underwhelming displays.
Rojas linked up with national side Paraguay for the Copa America and, although he didn’t see a great deal of action for his country, he seems to have returned rejuvenated.
He has scored two goals in his last three games and he was on target in the Leagues Cup win over Puebla during the group stage, so he looks a good outside option for an anytime effort in this last 32 tie.
Former Newcastle United midfielder Matthew Longstaff has settled in well at Toronto since arriving as a free agent back in February, but he is no stranger to the referee’s notebook.
Longstaff has five yellow cards in 24 MLS appearances so far and also picked up a booking in the win over Mexican outfit Pachuca in the final round of group games.
The 24-year-old’s last four yellow cards have all come in road games and he stands out as a clear card contender ahead of this all-MLS Leagues Cup tie.
