Inter Miami: 2024 schedule, players, manager, stadium & more

Inter Miami are getting prepared for what is only their fifth campaign in Major League Soccer and expectations are getting bigger for Messi and Co. following their victory in last season's Leagues Cup.

Four full seasons in the MLS have yielded only one playoff campaign and last season they could finish only 14th in the Eastern Conference with just nine wins from 34 regular-season matches.

However, Gerardo Martino did guide them to their first major trophy, the expanded 2023 Leagues Cup, with World Cup-winning forward Lionel Messi playing a pivotal part in that success.

Having David Beckham as an owner has allowed Inter to attract some of the game’s biggest names, with Messi having been joined by fellow former Barcelona stars Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez.

Stadium: DRV PNK Stadium
Manager: Gerardo Martino

Last season's performance

Last season was Inter Miami’s worst finish yet since they joined the MLS in 2020, as they finished 14th in the Eastern Conference, with only Toronto FC proving less successful.

However, Inter Miami showed significant signs of promise at the back end of the campaign after Messi's arrival as they lost only five of their final 16 league games.

Replacing Phil Neville with the experience of Martino, once in charge of Barcelona and Argentina, in July proved the trick and it inspired them to claim their first ever trophy as a club.

Inter Miami won seven matches to claim the Leagues Cup, with the magic of Messi playing a key part as he fired home ten goals during that run, and that success ensures that next season they will be competing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Miami also reached the US Open Cup final for the first time, but were beaten 2–1 at home to Houston Dynamo at the end of September.

Not only did Messi sign from Paris St-Germain, but Busquets and Alba joined from Barcelona, too, and that European pedigree was what helped transform their fortunes.

Their arrivals as well as the appointment of Martino came too late to make up for the ground in the push for the MLS playoffs, but it at least offered hope for the season to come.

This season's prospects

Inter Miami have never finished higher than sixth in the Eastern Conference, with their efforts in 2022 by some way their best finish in four seasons as a franchise.

The Herons were beaten 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs then by New York City FC, although it would go down as a big disappointment were they not to surpass those achievements this season.

Not only are they managed by a master in Martino, who guided Atlanta United to the Eastern Conference Championship in 2018, but they can call upon the services of four Champions League winners in Messi, Busquets, Alba and Suarez.

A full campaign armed with that quality and experience, complemented by some excellent youth talent in the form of Leonardo Campana and Facundo Farias, could make them a formidable force this season.

Big things will be expected of the Beckham-backed franchise this season and it should be one filled with success, which is why they are +275 to win the MLS Cup.
