Atlanta United denied Inter Miami a ticket to the conference semis by winning Game 2 but have it all to do in the decider in Florida.
ATL will have to make do without star right back and leading assist provider Brooks Lennon after he suffered a dislocated shoulder in Game 1.
Miami has a long injury list, and it includes a key player in Sergio Busquets who may recover from a virus in time for Game 3. The other big names - Leo Messi, Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba - are ready to go.
There probably weren't too many takers outside of Atlanta who had this series down for a Game 3 but here we are, heading back to Fort Lauderdale for the decider.
Eastern Conference top seed Miami were solid favorites having booked their place in the playoffs almost two months before Atlanta squeezed in as the ninth seed and won the Wild Card match to advance and face Miami.
Luis Suarez led the favorites in a 2-1 win in Game 1 at Chase Stadium, and when Hector Martinez put Miami ahead in the 40th minute of Game 2 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a 2-0 series sweep looked a given.
But, Atlanta is battle tested, having beaten the New York Red Bulls and Orlando City SC just to scrape into the postseason, and then holding their nerve to beat Montreal in a shootout in the Wild Card game. The Five Stripes just do not seem to have any quit in them.
Derrick Williams equalized, Lionel Messi had a goal disallowed for offside as Miami threw the works at the home side, and Xande Silva sent the city of Atlanta wild by netting the winner in the fourth minute of added time.
So a matchup that looked one-sided has proved anything but. Still, everything points to Miami getting the job done in Game 3 and moving on.
Messi himself needs to up his game and Tata Martino could do with Sergio Busquets recovering from a virus, but both look likely to happen. The bigger the occasion the better the game from Messi is the general rule of thumb and this is the biggest game he has been involved in for a while.
In Game 1 in Fort Lauderdale, the home team had 22 shots to Atlanta's eight and over twice as many passes. It was a pretty dominant effort and it's clear they have a massive edge at a venue where they have won eight and drawn one of their last nine games.
This is all about getting the win so expect a degree of caginess from the visitors who need to stay in the game. To that end, Miami win it - but not in a flood of goals.
Inter Miami don't need to look far beyond their South American legends for goals with Luis Suarez on 21 for the MLS season and Lionel Messi on 20.
But the supporting cast deserves a shoutout for their work in helping Miami dominate in the regular seaosn.
And no one deserves a shoutout more than Jordi Alba, Spain's European Championship-winning left-back who plays in a more advanced role for Tata Martino and moves like he's much younger than his age of 35.
Alba has been a key weapon down the left side for the Florida aces with 11 assists to go with his four goals.
He managed to get one shot away in Atalanta and should be backed at a nice price to get at least one on target back in front of the home faithful.
Derrick Williams brought the house down with his first goal since June 2023 in Game 2.
Goalscoring was never his forte back in his pomp with Bristol City and Blackburn Rovers in English football - three in one season was his best ever return at Rovers.
Bookings, however, play to his strengths. The no-nonsense defender has personal bests of eight yellows in a season at Bristol City plus seven for DC United and is on a roll with a pair of yellows in the first two games against Miami.
Williams can complete the hat-trick by having his name taken in a match where nothing is going to be left out there.
