Germany and Portugal go head-to-head on Wednesday with a place in the Nations League final up for grabs.
After edging out Italy in the quarterfinals in March, Germany can book their place in Sunday’s final by seeing off Portugal in Munich.
On home soil in Munich, Germany are favorites to prevail in Wednesday’s Nations League semifinal as Julian Nagelsmann’s side look to set up a Sunday showdown against either reigning champions Spain or France.
Germany have never won the Nations League but they comfortably came top of Group A3, going undefeated to finish five points clear of the Netherlands, and they can extend their unbeaten streak to nine games with victory at the Allianz Arena.
In the last eight, Die Mannschaft came from behind to beat the Italians 2-1 in the first leg before they were involved in a thrilling second leg which ended 3-3 after the Azzurri recovered from 3-0 down in Dortmund.
It is likely to be another close tie in the last four against Portugal, who won the inaugural Nations League tournament in 2018/19, but Germany are fancied to edge it.
Portugal needed extra time to overcome Denmark in their quarterfinal, eventually winning the second leg at home 5-2 after the first game finished 1-0 in favor of the Danes in Copenhagen.
Germany have won the last five meetings between the countries, although only one of those matches has come in the last decade - when the Germans triumphed 4-2 in the group stage of Euro 2020 at the same venue as Wednesday’s eagerly-anticipated clash.
Like that most recent matchup between these two European heavyweights, the semifinal could be full of goals.
Germany were the top-scorers across Group A in the Nations League, hitting 18 goals in their six matches, while Portugal banged in 14 as they finished top of A1.
Furthermore, the attacking talent in both camps is eye-catching. Germany have Liverpool target Florian Wirtz, plus Bayern Munich stars Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane among their threats.
As for Portugal, they can rely on veteran superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who is set to win his 220th cap in midweek, as well as the likes of Premier League regulars Diogo Jota and Bruno Fernandes.
Wirtz is being widely tipped to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer with Premier League champions Liverpool leading the chase for his signature.
The attacking midfielder has just finished the domestic season in Germany with 16 goals in all competitions and he can add to his international tally of six goals from 29 appearances when he lines up against Portugal.
Wirtz’s last goals for his country came when he bagged a brace in the 7-0 Nations League group win over Bosnia in November, while the 22-year-old was suspended for the quarterfinal games against Italy.
