The first quarterfinal at the FIFA Club World Cup is one few fans would have expected to see before the round-of-16 games were played, but Fluminense will face Al Hilal at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando on Friday for a place in the semifinals.
Brazilian team Fluminense impressed in their 2-0 win over European giants Inter Milan in their first elimination game, but Saudi side Al Hilal caused an even bigger upset when ending the hopes of English Premier League club Manchester City with a 4-3 extra-time success.
Brazilian teams impressed in the group stage of the FIFA Club World Cup with four teams from the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A reaching the last 16, but only two remain at the quarterfinal stage.
Fluminense have been made underdogs for their match against Al Hilal but that is something of a surprise and may prove to be an overreaction to the Saudi squad's victory over Manchester City.
Al Hilal did supremely well to stay in touch with the English team, scoring well-timed goals early in the second half of regulation and the start of extra time but they had only 28% possession in the match and City had 32 goal attempts to their 17 with 14 of them on target compared to Al Hilal's six.
The Saudi side had opened their tournament by holding mighty Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw, giving notice of their potential and staying unbeaten in the group stage by drawing 0-0 with FC Salzburg and beating Pachuca 2-0.
Fluminense signalled their intentions by holding Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund to a tie in their opening match and then beat Ulsan HD, before tying with Mamelodi Sundowns to earn the point they needed to qualify.
They stepped up their performance level to beat Inter Milan, scoring early and dealing with the inevitable onslaught from the Italian side before striking again on the counter-attack for a 2-0 win.
We now have a clash of two teams who were perhaps underrated at the start of the tournament but Fluminense's strong defense could be their greatest asset. They have shut out five of their last six opponents and after winning without allowing a goal against Inter, they may be too strong for Al Hilal, too.
Another period of extra time may be required, and with Fluminense available at plus-odds to advance to the next round by any means, that is preferred to a 90-minute win wager.
Jhon Arias scored Fluminense's first goal in their 4-2 win over Korean side Ulsan in the group stage and he has remained an energetic presence in their offense.
The Colombian winger has been linked to English Premier League teams West Ham and Leeds and has not been shy about having goal attempts in this tournament, firing off 13 shots in four matches so far. He looks a likely goalscorer for the South American team.
There have been six yellow cards shown to players in each of Fluminense's last two matches and manager Renato Gaucho was also cautioned at the end of the first half in the fiercely contested game against Inter Milan in the round of 16.
Al Hilal have a better disciplinary record so far, but were shown three late yellow cards while trying to hold out for their draw against Real Madrid and the pressure of the occasion could lead to an uncompromising approach from both teams.
Taking at least five cards to be shown in the match appeals as both teams eye the huge prize of a place in the semifinals.
