Everton host neighbours Liverpool for the final time in the Premier League at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Everton will move to their new Everton Stadium home next season, ending a 132-year stay at Goodison. Unless these city rivals are paired together in the FA Cup, this will be their final Merseyside Derby at this venue.
Liverpool go into the game as the Premier League leaders but they saw their advantage cut to seven points on Wednesday as they were held to a 3-3 draw at Newcastle.
Everton thrashed relegation rivals Wolves 4-0 in their own midweek fixture, ending a five-game winless run in emphatic fashion to boost their survival hopes.
Liverpool would ordinarily be expected to win fairly comfortably at any team in the bottom half of the Premier League table, but this game is a different matter.
The Reds have dominated recent meetings with four wins in the last six head-to-head clashes but Everton claimed the spoils in the most recent Merseyside Derby, triumphing 2-0 when these sides met towards the end of last season.
Goodison hasn’t been a particularly happy hunting ground for Liverpool in recent years either, as they have just one win in their last seven trips to their neighbors, while they have only managed two victories at this venue since 2011 - a run stretching 12 games.
Everton have only won one of those 12 games, however, meaning there have been plenty of Merseyside Derby draws at Goodison in recent times. Backing the hosts to claim the spoils may be a step too far, but they can at least earn a point.
This is also Everton’s biggest game of the season in many respects and the players should be able to raise their levels for this huge derby.
For the home players there will be an almost cup final feeling about this game, and they will be desperate to at the very least avoid defeat in probably the last ever clash between these two great rivals at this historic ground.
The game has plenty of importance for Liverpool too, but they had their own huge fixture against Manchester City last week and then they saw a seven-game winning run ended at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
Liverpool now need to find a way to pick themselves up again for what should be a hard-fought derby, while Everton are unbeaten in their last five at Goodison and were given a timely confidence boost by thrashing Wolves on Wednesday.
There have been more cards than goals in each of the last six Merseyside Derbies, a run stretching back to a 0-0 draw at this ground in 2018 when no bookings were dished out, and that could be the case again this weekend.
As such, it makes sense to focus on the card markets for our player bets with a pick from each team and Idrissa Gueye looks a contender for Everton.
Gueye has two bookings in his last four games and is averaging a hefty 1.8 fouls per game. The Senegalese midfielder has committed at least one foul in each of his last seven league games and multiple infringements in four of his last five.
From a Liverpool angle, captain Virgil van Dijk looks a good outside option.
The towering defender has only been booked once this season but he has picked up a yellow card in each of his last three appearances at Goodison Park. The importance of the occasion will not be lost on the visiting skipper, so at a big price a card for Van Dijk appeals.
