England may be sitting at the top of Group C going into Tuesday’s final pool game against Slovenia, but there needs to be some improvement in Cologne to see a return of the pre-Euro 2024 optimism surrounding this team.
The Three Lions have picked up four points from their opening two games against Serbia and Denmark but their conservative football has left many questioning if they have the game plan to get to the final as they did at Euro 2020.
A 1-1 stalemate against the Danes in Frankfurt did little to inspire the imagination, but head coach Gareth Southgate and his side have an opportunity to put in a convincing performance against a Slovenia side who themselves have been a tough nut to crack in this competition.
Winning five and drawing once, England have a strong record in this fixture since their first meeting with Slovenia back in 2009.
The Three Lions last met at Wembley in 2017 and it was Harry Kane’s late goal that saw England come out on top 1-0 in London.
Slovenia have proven to be tough to beat at Euro 2024 so far, drawing 1-1 with both Denmark and Serbia in their opening two games.
Head coach Matjaz Kek and got his side playing good counter-attacking football and they will look to try and hurt England on the break.
Slovenia might well get themselves on the scoresheet but it’s hard to see them denying England their second win of the competition on Tuesday.
The Three Lions will be determined to put in a positive performance and enter the knockout stages of the competition with winning momentum having topped the group.
Slovenia to get on the scoresheet but for England to finish the match victorious is worth considering at +260.
Kane was one player to come under criticism for the manner of his performance in the draw with Denmark last time out.
Despite scoring the opening goal of the game in Frankfurt, the Bayern Munich star’s link-up play left plenty to be desired.
A player who has silenced his critics throughout his career, Kane will be fired up to produce a goalscoring performance at the RheinEnergieStadion.
Scoring the opening and winning goal for England against Slovenia in their last meeting, Kane is good value in the first goalscorer market at +275.
During Slovenia’s qualifying for this summer’s European Championship in Germany, no player picked up more yellow cards than Petar Stojanovic.
The Sampdoria right-back was played slightly further forward against Serbia last time out, but will still have plenty of work to do defensively on Tuesday against Southgate’s side.
With Phil Foden and Kiernan Trippier likely to start down that flank, Stojanovic will have his plate full trying to stop deliveries into the box for the likes of Kane and Bakayo Saka to convert.
Given his record in qualifying, it would be little surprise to see Stojanovic end up in the referee’s book in what could be a combative encounter in Cologne.
