Cruz Azul head to Subaru Park on Sunday night as the Leagues Cup group stage wraps up. The early Liga MX pacesetters have work to do in this one, after dropping points in their opener.
Philadelphia Union are in a strong position, having won their opening game. That secured their place in the next round, but a defeat in this clash would see them slip to second place in the group, making their path to the final all that more difficult.
Can the Union pick up another victory, or will Cruz Azul shake off a poor run in this competition?
Cruz Azul enter as favorites in this clash after taking 10 points from their opening four games of the league season. While they are flying high in Liga MX, their 0-0 draw with Charlotte in their opening group game has to be a point of concern.
The Mexican side have struggled since their first appearance in this competition, winning just one of their four games in the Leagues Cup to date. They squeezed through the group stage a year ago, only to lose in the first round of the knockout stage.
This trip looks difficult as Philadelphia Union have stitched together a three-game winning streak at Subaru Park. This has been a mixed campaign for the Union, who are 10th in the Eastern Conference after a rough start. However, their recent upturn in form proves there is quality in this side.
Cruz Azul have started well domestically but their Leagues Cup record has to be taken into account. They have yet to win a game outright in the competition, so Philadelphia should be good to at least avoid defeat. Back the Union on the draw no bet market at +100.
While the Union are enduring an under-par campaign, forward Daniel Gazdag has been impressive. After just 21 MLS appearances this term he’s a goal shy of his total for the entirety of last season. He’s scored 14 goals, a return well above one every two games.
The Hungarian striker has enjoyed some statement displays already this season, signing off ahead of the MLS break with a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory over Nashville. He’s firmly in the top-scorer race this season and he can add to that good MLS return with more success in the Leagues Cup.
Gazdag didn’t find the net against Charlotte but considering his good form he’s well-priced to cause problems for Cruz Azul.
The Union have scored nine goals across their three-game winning run and more entertainment should follow on Sunday night. While Cruz Azul have seen some low-scoring games in this competition, they should relish heading to a side that has conceded 1.4 goals per game at home in MLS action this term.
The Union’s upturn in scoring should still see them come away with the points, but it’s hard to see the hosts claiming a third clean sheet on the bounce. Cruz Azul have scored in four of their last five matches and they can score in a defeat this weekend.
Take Philadelphia for a 2-1 victory on the correct score market, which is priced at +900.
