The United States were favorites for the Olympic women’s soccer tournament at the start and have booked their place in the gold-medal match after beating Germany in the semifinals.
However, opponents Brazil will be full of confidence after first beating hosts France, before a surprise 4-2 victory over world champions Spain.
The stars appeared to be aligned that the United States would face Spain in the final of the women’s soccer tournament, but things have not turned out that way.
The USWNT has looked strong throughout the competition and while Emma Hayes’ team was unable to replicate their dominant group-stage performance against Germany when they faced the same opponents in the semifinals, they still got the job done.
We have seen a different side to the US team in the knockout rounds after nine goals were scored in the three pool games as single-goal wins have been posted against Japan and Germany and extra-time has been required for both of those victories.
This matchup with Brazil has all the hallmarks of being another close encounter and their opponents will be delighted to have got to the gold-medal match when many had written off their chances.
They were defeated by both Japan and Spain, but the team has risen to the challenge having qualified as one of the two best third-placed sides.
Despite the suspension of star midfielder Marta for a red card against Spain, wins have been posted against France and Spain so there will be a lot of confidence that another victory can be recorded in the gold medal decider.
But it looks set to be a cagey game and lots of nerves should be in evidence, so don’t be surprised if it goes to extra-time, which makes the tie a good bet at +210.
With the matchup set to be a close affair, we should still expect the United States, who claimed the most recent of its four gold medals at London in 2012, to come through and grab glory in the end.
Hayes’s team has shown great staying power in its knockout matches and an extra-time goal has been enough to beat both Japan in the quarter-finals and Germany in the last four in France so far.
Brazil is likely to make life as difficult as possible and could try and follow the successful recipe they had against France, when they stung Les Bleues with a goal eight minutes from the end of regulation time through Gaby Portilho.
The United States will be patient and know they can come through should the game go to extra-time, so it is worth chancing they will eventually win at the end of 120 minutes at +900.
With a cagey game in prospect, goals are likely to be scarce, but it is still worth taking a chance that the United States forward Mallory Swanson will be able to make a positive impression in 90 minutes by either scoring or providing an assist at +125.
She scored in each of her final league games for Chicago Red Stars before the Olympics and has taken her good form into the tournament, setting up her colleagues for goals twice, including Spohie Smith’s winner against Germany in the semis.
Swanson will also be keen to increase her tally for the tournament from three goals and she is definitely a player to keep an eye on in the big game.
