Bayern Munich could not have had a more straightforward opening assignment at the Club World Cup and the Bundesliga champions will be expected to make it two wins out of two when they face Boca Juniors from Argentina in Miami on Friday night.
A 10-0 win over Auckland City has put the German outfit firmly in control of Group C, but they will have seen UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain lose to South American opposition in their second game and will not wish the same thing to happen to them.
Bayern Munich hardly had to get out of first gear to beat Auckland City 10-0. While a test against Boca Juniors will be a lot tougher, we could still see plenty of goals.
Boca are looking to make up for lost time after allowing Benfica to battle back from a two-goal deficit to draw their opening game, but it showed they have the ability to threaten Manuel Neuer’s goal.
Whether they have enough to beat Vincent Kompany’s Bundesliga champions is another matter, especially as Bayern have now scored 26 goals in their last six matches and possess a wealth of attacking power.
The Germans will look to press home their advantage and this looks a game where there could be plenty of goals, so taking Bayern to win a game that features at least three looks the best way to go.
A large-margin Bayern win was anticipated in their first game against Auckland but what was a surprise in their opening encounter was that Harry Kane was unable to get on the scoresheet.
Kompany’s side were in cruise control after establishing a six-goal first-half lead, but Kane took a back seat, having just one shot on goal before he was withdrawn in the 60th minute with his team on easy street.
But the England captain surely cannot be held back for too long and his goalscoring record is so strong with 26 goals netted in the last Bundesliga campaign in which he generated 105 efforts on goal.
The former Tottenham hitman had a total of 27 goal efforts in his final seven games of the league season, and this looks a great opportunity for Bayern's talismanic striker to come to the party. It is worth a chance for him to score more than once against these Argentinian opponents.
This could prove to be a difficult game for the Boca Juniors defense due to the sheer depth of Bayern’s attacking resources.
Apart from Kane, who is set to lead the line and provide the central outlet deep in the Boca half, the Argentinians will also have to cope with the pace of Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise in support.
And if that is not enough there are players such as Jamal Musiala, who scored a hat-trick as a substitute against Auckland, former Manchester City wideman Leroy Sane (before he joins Galatasaray next month), and Serge Gnabry to add as potential reinforcements.
The pace and power will be coming from all quarters and one player who could have his hands full is Boca’s Peruvian full-back Luis Advincula, who may find his opportunities to push forward restricted.
Advincula has picked up two bookings in the Argentinian league this season, but he has conceded 10 fouls in his last three league outings and those were against opposition vastly inferior to the Bundesliga champions. It would not be a surprise if he went into the book on Friday.
