The first game of the revamped Club World Cup will see Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami team-mates face Egyptian outfit Al Ahly, who will have strong ambitions in Group A having won the African Champions League in three of the last five seasons.

Al Alhy and Inter Miami have the honour of kicking off the newly expanded Club World Cup in Florida on Saturday night, and it could be the Egyptians who have the most to celebrate after their Group A opener.

Inter Miami, who are third in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer, have the star quality with big names such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets in their roster, but the Egyptians have a great deal of pedigree at this level and will fancy their chances of gaining an opening win.

They have won the African Champions League on 12 occasions, including in 2021, 2023 and 2024, and while their semi-final exit means that manager Jose Riveiro will be taking charge of his first competitive game, they can still come out on top of this one.

Miami had their own last-four disappointment as they fell in the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions cup at the hands of Vancouver Whitecaps, and the form of Javier Mascherano’s side in MLS does not encourage confidence.

They have won their last two games against Montreal and Columbus Crew, but that has made it just four victories in their last 12 outings and while they have plenty of ability in the attacking third, it has to be a concern that they conceded at least three times in each of their seven matches before those two victories.

Playing in their home city is a boost but this is a step into the unknown and backing the Egyptians in the tie-no-bet market could be a passport to profit.

Wessem Abou Ali to score at any time (+130)

The Egyptians will be delighted to have striker Wessem Abou Ali available for their Club World Cup opener and there looks a strong chance he can get himself on the scoresheet.

He has returned from international duty for Palestine, for whom he scored in a 2-0 win over Kuwait while also playing his part in a 1-1 draw against Oman.

The forward should go into the tournament charged for action and his recent form in the Egyptian League has been formidable.

He has netted in five of his last six matches and that run included four goals in the 6-0 victory over Pharco in his most recent outing.

His confidence could hardly be at a higher level, so there looks a strong chance he can get off the mark in this year’s competition at the first attempt.

Luis Suarez to be booked (+275)

This opening match of the tournament could prove to be an intense affair and if that is the case we can expect Uruguayan Luis Suarez to be at the heart of the action.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward has been a love/hate figure for most of his career and while his goalscoring exploits are often marveled at, his behaviour can make him a divisive character for fans and we could see both sides of him in this fixture.

Suarez has picked up four yellow cards in Major League Soccer this season and it is noticeable that he has committed multiple fouls in six of his last nine Inter Miami appearances.

Inter Miami will be looking for a fast start but there looks a decent chance that they could be frustrated and if things boil over then Suarez will surely be involved, so it is worth taking a chance he picks up another caution.
