AC Milan vs. Liverpool: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

An iconic meeting of former European foes takes place at the Stadio San Siro on Tuesday when AC Milan host Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.

These two sides have met four times previously, twice in the competition’s final itself, with Liverpool holding a 2-1 head-to-head advantage with one contest finishing all square.

The Merseyside club famously came back from 3-0 down to force extra time in the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League final, before beating AC Milan in the ensuing penalty shootout.

The Serie A giants gained revenge two seasons later when they prevailed 2-1 in the final in Athens to claim their seventh title.

But the Rossoneri have ventured beyond the quarterfinal stage only once since then — two seasons ago — when their path to the final was blocked by city rivals Inter Milan.

Liverpool’s recent pedigree in the competition, which includes three final appearances in the last seven years, is an impressive one, but a new era is just beginning at Anfield after the departure of Jurgen Klopp.

Arne Slot’s side had made a great start to the Premier League campaign with nine points from their first three games, but they suffered their first setback on Saturday in a 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, AC Milan started this season with two draws and one defeat before registering their first win at the weekend with a 4-0 home victory over Venezia.

AC Milan vs. Liverpool betting picks and predictions

AC Milan Under 1.5 Goals (-200)

AC Milan have been scoring and conceding goals in Serie A this season, but it may be a different story when they come up against one of the favorites to win the UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool have conceded only once in four matches this term and it took an almost perfect counter-attack from unbeaten Nottingham Forest to breach their rock-solid defense.

Milan, meanwhile, scored fewer than two goals in four of their six group-stage matches in last season’s UEFA Champions League.

Mohamed Salah Over 1.5 Shots on target (+175)

One reason why Milan have been struggling to stop their opponents from scoring this season is the high ratio of shots on target that they have faced.

Of the 29 shots that have rained down on their goal since early August, 13 have been on target, with that ratio representing the third-highest among Serie A clubs.

By contrast, Liverpool have faced the fewest shots on target in the Premier League this season.

Mohamed Salah looks likely to exploit any weakness in Milan’s defense on Tuesday following his strong start to the season.

The Egypt international’s three goals have come from a total of 13 shots, of which eight were on target.

He is averaging 2.05 shots on target per 90 minutes this season and looks like an ideal candidate to test Milan’s goalkeeper on a couple of occasions this week.

Youssouf Fofana Under 2.5 Tackles (-175)

Fofana, who was signed by Milan from Monaco in the summer, is not a high volume tackler.

The Frenchman is in the 41st percentile for tackles made among central midfielders in Europie’s top five leagues with an average of just 1.89 per match.

And so far in his nascent Milan career, he has recorded only one tackle in two full matches plus one brief substitute appearance.

Liverpool might enjoy more possession than Milan on Tuesday, but it is unlikely that Paolo Fonseca will tell his players to go hunting the ball.

And Slot’s midfielders tend to be so good at maintaining possession through long spells that there may not be too many opportunities for Fofana to try to win it back.

This market looks like one for under’s players, especially if Fofana does not last the full 90 minutes.

He was replaced after 79 minutes against Venezia and Fonseca may want to keep him fresh for their upcoming Milan derby with Inter on Sunday.
