Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani is having a season for the ages after he signed the largest contract in MLB history in the offseason, and he has a chance to reach two legendary milestones before the campaign ends.
Ohtani can win the Triple Crown and join the 50-50 club.
The Triple Crown - leading either the American League or National League in batting average, home runs and RBI - has only been accomplished 18 times, and only six players have won a Triple Crown while leading all of MLB in the three statistical categories.
No player in MLB has ever reached the 50-50 club, which is when a player hits 50 home runs and steals 50 bases in a single season. Only six players have reached the 40-40 club, and those players are Ronald Acuna Jr., Alfonso Soriano, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Jose Canseco and now Ohtani.
The LA Dodgers have 19 games remaining ahead of their September 9th game against the Chicago Cubs.
Ohtani needs four more home runs and four more stolen bases to reach the 50-50 club.
In the running for the Major League Triple Crown, Ohtani is currently .045 batting average points behind league leader Bobby Witt Jr., five home runs behind league leader Aaron Judge, and 24 RBI behind league leader Judge.
In the NL alone, he's first in home runs with 46, tied for first with Willy Adames of the Milwaukee Brewers in RBI with 101, and sixth in batting average, .024 points behind NL leader Luis Arraez of the San Diego Padres.
