The Oklahoma City Thunder are one of two teams with an undefeated record after seven games, and point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has become the NBA MVP favorite.
SGA is now +250 to win the award after he entered the season as the +400 joint-second favorite behind Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic and tied with three-time MVP Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic.
Doncic is now the +300 second-favorite, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is the +450 third-favorite, and Jokic has the fourth-shortest odds at +750. Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards is next at +800 before a drop-off to the sixth player in the market, Los Angeles Lakers center Anthony Davis at +1600.
Through seven games, Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 25.7 points on 47.4 percent shooting with 6.6 rebounds, 6.9 assists, 1.7 steals, 1.0 block and 2.1 turnovers, and the Thunder are 7-0.
His +24.0 net rating is fourth-best in the league among players to average 15 minutes per game or more, he is one of 27 players with a usage rating over 30 percent, and his 3.2 assist-to-turnover ratio is among the best of any high-usage guard.
The Kentucky product is also dominating on the defensive end. He leads the NBA in defensive win shares (0.272), and his opponents shoot just 36.5 percent from the field on 10.6 shots per game with him as the closest defender, per NBA tracking stats. That dips to just 19.4 percent on threes attempted with SGA defending.
An example of his dominance on both ends was in OKC's 114-95 win over the Chicago Bulls early in the season. SGA scored 23 points with eight rebounds, two assists, four steals and one turnover, and he held Bulls top scorers Coby White and Zach LaVine to 3/7 shooting, including 1/5 from three, as the nearest defender.
Plus, as a result of the hot start led by Gilgeous-Alexander's MVP-level play early on, the Thunder are now +425 to win the NBA Championship after entering the season at +700, although they still sit behind the favored Boston Celtics.
If SGA keeps on leading his team offensively while locking up opponents' stars on defense, he'll stay near the top of the MVP market all season.
