MLB Saturday review: Seattle Mariners in the hunt

A few weeks ago, the Seattle Mariners were more of an afterthought than a serious playoff contender.

They have certainly flipped the script recently, having won four games in a row and eight of their last 10. Their most recent win came against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night, who they beat by a final score of 3-2.

The Mariners are still slacking when it comes to the American League West Division, trailing the Texas Rangers by 6.0 games, however they have picked up a ton of momentum in terms of the American League Wild-Card, trailing the Toronto Blue Jays for the final spot by just 2.5 games.

Spearheading the Mariners’ win streak is their offense, who have averaged 5.75 runs per game during this stretch. Their pitching has been solid as of late as well, allowing 3.75 runs per game.

The Mariners still clearly have some work to do if they are going to make a final push for the playoffs over the next two months, but with their current form and increased offensive production, they are certainly a team to watch out for down the stretch.

If you want to bet on the Seattle Mariners, you can find them at odds of +2800 to win the World Series, odds of +1400 to win the American League, odds of +1400 to win the American League West Division, and odds of +205 to make the playoffs.

Rangers looking like contenders

After the Houston Astros' slow start, most people probably thought that the Texas Rangers would hold the lead in the American League West division for a few months, but eventually the Astros would retake control of the division and coast to yet another divisional title. However, that has not been the case as the Rangers only seem to be getting better and better.

They acquired Max Scherzer from the New York Mets at the deadline and have now won five games in a row, the most recent win coming against the Miami Marlins on Saturday night. They still only hold a 2.5 game lead over the Astros in the division, but all signs are starting to point towards the Rangers claiming their first AL West title since 2016.

During their five-game win streak, the Rangers are doing what they do best, score runs. They are averaging 6.6 runs per game, while allowing 2.8 runs per game. This combination of great hitting and great pitching has been prevalent all season and with Scherzer now in the rotation, they should only increase their effectiveness on the mound.

If you want to bet on the Texas Rangers, you can find them at odds of +800 to win the World Series, odds of +400 to win the American League, odds of -140 to win the American League West Division, and odds of -700 to make the playoffs.

D'backs skidding

Once praised for leading the National League West division earlier this season, the Arizona Diamondbacks have now hit a wall. They have lost five games in a row to fall to 57-55, the most recent coming on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins, where they lost 12-1.

With that loss, they are now trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the division by 7.5 games. They are still in the hunt for the Wild-Card, trailing the final spot by 1.5 games, but momentum is not on their side.

During their five-game losing streak, the Diamondbacks’ offense has shut down completely. They are averaging 1.6 runs per game. Meanwhile, they are allowing an average of 4.8 runs per game.

While it is not quite time to hit the panic button just yet, the Diamondbacks will need to quickly improve and be more consistent both offensively and defensively. Otherwise, at this rate, they will miss the playoffs entirely after what looked to be such a promising season a few months ago.

If you want to bet on the Arizona Diamondbacks, you can find them at odds of +8000 to win the World Series, odds of +4000 to win the National League, odds of +4000 to win the National League West Division, and odds of +270 to make the playoffs.
