Saquon Barkley, Giants agree to one-year, $11 million deal

The star running back agreed to stay in New York for the 2023/24 season despite failing to reach a long-term agreement before last Monday’s franchise tag deadline.

The New York Giants will retain the services of Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley for at least one more year, after the sixth-year man signed a one-year, $11 million contract on Tuesday, July 25.

The deal includes $909,000 in incentives and a $2 million signing bonus, a slightly more favorable structure for Barkley, who did not sign his franchise tag tender worth $10.1 million first offered in March.

The $909,000 in incentives can be earned in full if Barkley reaches 1,350 yards plus a playoff berth, 65 receptions, and 11 touchdowns.

The deal comes as a surprise, considering the news and reports surrounding various NFL running backs in the aftermath of last Monday’s franchise tag deadline. Barkley, the Raiders’ Josh Jacobs, and the Cowboys’ Tony Pollard – all Pro-Bowlers in 2022/23 – were among the star backs franchise tagged that did not agree to a long-term deal with their team.

The result was an outcry of unfair treatment toward the running back position, which has become probably the most devalued position in the NFL. Teams and general managers seem increasingly unwilling to offer running backs multi-year, lucrative contracts due to the short average lifespan of the position in the league and the prioritization of paying other positions, like a quarterback.

Barkley was originally tagged as a direct result of Giants QB Daniel Jones agreeing to a four-year, $160 million contract in March.

It was a real possibility that Barkley would hold out of the Giants’ preseason, and perhaps part of the regular season, although reports indicated he would eventually play on the $10.1 million tag rather than sit out the entire year.

Now, his participation is confirmed, and the 2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year will look to lead the Giants to a second-straight playoff appearance.
