Built in 1910 and located in Birmingham, Alabama, Rickwood Field is the oldest professional baseball park still standing in the United States. It served as the home field for the Birmingham Black Barons, a powerhouse team in the Negro Leagues, from 1924-1960.
A reported 181 Hall of Famers played at Rickwood, including Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Reggie Jackson.
Mays, widely regarded as one of the best baseball players of all time, began his professional career with the Black Barons in 1948, the same year Rickwood hosted the final Negro League World Series game.
During its heyday in the early 1900s, Rickwood hosted spring training games for the Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates and college football games, including Alabama Crimson Tide games from 1912 to 1927.
Since the mid-1960s, the stadium has had several different controlling owners but maintained its purpose of hosting baseball games. A number of minor league teams, including the Kansas City Athletics' AA farm team, for whom Reggie Jackson played, called Rickwood their home park. Numerous renovations such as seating and scoreboard improvements were made in the latter half of the 20th century.
Since 1992, Rickwood has been under the care and control of the 'Friends of Rickwood,' whose efforts to restore the stadium to its former glory have led to the MLB hosting a regular season game there in 2024.
