Andy Ruiz vs. Jarrell Miller title at stake

There are no titles on the line in this heavyweight match-up but the winner will move closer to being in a position to challenge for a world title.

Andy Ruiz record

Andy Ruiz is best known for pulling off one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight boxing in the modern era when he stepped in as a late replacement to face Anthony Joshua in 2019.

Miller had been in line to face Joshua for the Briton’s US debut, but he was denied a licence by the New York Athletic Commission so Ruiz put his name forward and took the fight at short notice.

Joshua knocked Ruiz down for the first time in his career in the third round but the Californian responded with a knockdown of his own in the same round, before going on to claim an historic TKO win in the seventh.

Ruiz immediately lost his titles to Joshua in the rematch later that year and has campaigned lightly since with just two bouts since, beating both Chris Arreola and Luis Ortiz on points.

Before facing AJ Ruiz had compiled a 32-1 record and he made his debut as a 19-year-old back in 2009 with a first round victory over Miguel Salvador Ramirez in Tijuana.

Ruiz won six of his first eight fights inside the distance and his rise up the ranks began in earnest in 2013 when he stopped the previously unbeaten Joe Hanks in the fourth round to claim the vacant WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight.

In 2016 he earned a first world title shot after Tyson Fury vacated the WBO belt. Ruiz took on Joseph Parker in New Zealand and lost via majority decision in what was a close fight.

Destroyer responded well to that setback with three successive wins before he faced Joshua for the first time in June of 2019, having claimed a fifth round win over Alexander Dimitrenko just two months earlier.

His last fight came against Ortiz in September of 2022 and his record now stands at 35-2, with 22 wins inside the distance.

Jarrell Miller record

Jarrell Miller has a 26-1-1 record with 22 KOs and he comes into this bout after suffering the first defeat of his career, a 10th round TKO loss to Britain’s Daniel Dubois in December of 2023.

The 35-year-old is yet to challenge for a world title but will hope to put himself in contention by beating former WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO champion Ruiz.

Like Ruiz, the New Yorker made his debut in 2009 as he claimed a first round KO victory over Darius Whitson. Miller won his first four fights by stoppages but then drew a four round contest with Joey Dawejko in a contest where he was deducted two points for pushing.

Big Baby then embarked on a 19-fight winning streak that set him on course for a meeting with Joshua, but a suspension scuppered those plans.

Miller has a few notable wins on his record, including Mariusz Wach, Gerald Washington and Tomasz Adamek - who he faced between July 2017 and October 2018.

Miller was out of the ring from the end of 2018 until 2022 and he has fought four times since his comeback, picking up a win over veteran Lucas Browne before losing to Dubois.
