Pittsburgh and Detroit are both coming off ugly losses. The Red Wings were shutout 4-0 by the Rangers at home, while the Penguins suffered an even worse defeat, 7-1 against Dallas, on their home ice.
Pittsburgh won the first meeting back on Oct. 10 in Detroit and the Red Wings are one of only three Eastern Conference teams that the Penguins are ahead of in the standings. However, Detroit has had three days to rest, while Pittsurgh has only had one day off.
The Penguins are 6-4 against the Red Wings in their last 10 meetings and 4-1 in their last five meetings, including three consecutive victories.
There’s an even stronger signal to the over, though, as eight out of the last 10 meetings have featured nine goals or more, including the meeting earlier this season. Detroit has scored two or fewer goals in five out of their last six games, but the Penguins have allowed four or more goals in 12 out of 17 games this season and rank 31st in goals against per 60 minutes.
Pittsburgh is also among the bottom-three teams in shots against per 60 minutes, so this is a good opportunity for Detroit’s shooters. Lucas Raymond leads the team in points with 13, but he has one goal despite ranking fifth among forwards in shots with 23. Raymond’s shooting percentage has never been below 12.5 percent over a full season. Last season he scored on 19 percent of his shots.
Given that he’s on the top line and the top power play unit, this is a good matchup for the former 30-goal scorer to break out of his slump.
