Pennington began her MMA career in 2012 at various other promotions. Her very first professional fight was a win against Kim Couture by TKO. 

She lost her following fight to Tori Adams, but quickly bounced back to two consecutive wins against Sarah Moras and Raquel Canuto. Following those wins, Pennington then lost two fights in a row to Cat Zingano and Leslie Smith. 

Near the end of 2013, Pennington made her UFC debut at The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale, where she defeated Roxanne Modafferi by unanimous decision. The following year, Pennington lost to Jessica Andrade in March of 2014 and beat Ashlee Evans-Smith by submission in December of 2014. 

Early in 2015, Pennington got a huge test against Holly Holm, a fight she lost by split decision. 

This loss however, sparked a four-fight win streak between September 2015 to November of 2016. During the streak, Pennington defeated Jessica Andrade, Bethe Correia, Elizabeth Phillips, and Miesha Tate. 

Pennington did not fight again until May of 2018, where she challenged Amanda Nunes for her Bantamweight title. It was a one-sided fight as Nunes quickly won by KO/TKO.

After this loss to Nunes, Pennington started to become a little inconsistent, losing two of her next three fights between November of 2018 and January of 2020. By June of 2020, Pennington was back to winning, and has not looked back since. 

This win sparked her current five-fight win streak from June of 2020 to January of 2023, a streak she put on the line in her first UFC title bout at UFC 297. She won that fight for the vacant Bantamweight title, beating Mayra Bueno Silva via unanimous decision.

Over the course of her career so far, Pennington has won 11 times by decision, four times by submission, and once by KO/TKO. Her losses include six times by decision, once by submission and once by KO/TKO.
