NFL - US Sports: Rams refill Kupp with deal extension

Los Angeles Rams and star wide receiver Cooper Kupp have reportedly shaken hands on a three-year, $80 million contract extension that will see him make $110m over the next five years.

It is the second significant piece of business done by the Rams, 9/2 to retain the NFC Championship, inside 48 hours after the Super Bowl champions restructured Aaron Donald's deal earlier this week to make him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.

Amongst the top-earners

Kupp will climb up the list of the league's top earners and, although his new contract won't top those of Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, DeAndre Hopkins or AJ Brown in terms of average annual value, the $75m in guaranteed money he will be due is the most for any wide receiver or non-quarterback offensive player.

The 28-year-old, who can plan an extravagant birthday celebration next week, deserves to be in the highest company when it comes to remuneration after several seasons of significant production in Sean McVay's Rams' offense.

The addition of Matthew Stafford last season helped catapult Kupp from being the best on his team to being a league leader as he topped out with 145 receptions, 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns to land the coveted receiving triple crown.

Stats continue to impress

The former third-round draft pick also racked up the most yards after the catch with a total of 846 - 67 more than the next man in that category - Deebo Samuel of the San Francisco 49ers.

Kupp won Super Bowl LVI Most Valuable Player for his performance against the Cincinnati Bengals at SoFi Stadium last February and also made the clutch play that set up the Rams; game-winning field goal against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January's NFC divisional round matchup.

"The Los Angeles Rams made a childhood vision a reality when they showed their belief in me on draft day and today they showed continued faith. For that I want to thank the Kroenke family, the front office and coach McVay," he said in a statement.
