Portland Timbers vs. Colorado Rapids preview: Odds, how to watch, TV channel, kick-off time, head-to-head stats and team news

The revamped Colorado Rapids open their season with a visit to a Western Conference rival, the Portland Timbers.

The Timbers have struggled in the past two seasons, finishing 19th in the league last season and 16th in 2022. Colorado, after finishing 28th out of 29 teams, brought in three players with United States Men's National Team experience and a new coach to turn the team around.

Both teams are in a period of transition and will want to start the 2024 season on a high note.

New signings Maxime Crepeau and Kamal Miller could make their debuts in new head coach Phil Neville's first match with the Timbers.

New signings Lamine Diack, Omir Fernandez, Andrew Gutman, Jasper Loffelsend, Rafael Navarro, Miguel Navarro, Djordje Mihailovic, Zack Steffen, Sidnei Tavares and Sam Vines, plus draftees Wayne Frederick and Kimani Stewart-Baynes, could make their debuts.

This match will be the Rapids' first under new head coach Chris Armas. He previously managed the New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC, and he served as an assistant under one of the innovators of the high press, Ralf Rangnick, at Manchester United and under Jesse Marsch at Leeds United.

Portland Timbers vs. Colorado Rapids stats

Both teams missed last season's MLS Cup Playoffs: Portland finished 10th in the West with 43 points and a 11-10-13 (wins-draws-losses) record and Colorado finished last with a 5-12-17 record for 27 points.

The Timbers went 9-3-5 at home while the Rapids went 2-4-11 on the road in 2023.

Colorado scored the joint-fewest goals in MLS in 2023 with 26; Portland scored 46. Cole Bassett was the Rapids' top scorer with six goals and Evander was the Timbers' top scorer with nine goals.
