Oklahoma State vs. Colorado: Picks, Predictions and Odds

Heading into the final week of the regular season, the Big 12 championship race is one that has a tremendous number of possibilities, as there are at least six different teams that could end up making the title game if things break their way.

One of those teams happens to be Colorado, even if the Buffaloes’ chances of making the title game took a massive hit following their loss to Kansas a week ago. Deion Sanders’ team can still qualify for the conference championship game with a win over Oklahoma State on Friday, if they get some help with a few other results the following day.

As for the Cowboys, it’s been a tumultuous season for Oklahoma State, as Mike Gundy’s team has not won a single game in conference play and currently holds a 3-8 record. However, the offense did show signs of life in a loss to Texas Tech last week, so it’s possible that they could end the season with a solid performance in Boulder.

This is a game that looked a lot more interesting on paper prior to the season, but these teams are trending in completely different directions at the moment. Will Colorado bounce back after last week’s loss and finish off its impressive season on a high note, or can the Cowboys make this Big 12 clash closer than anticipated?

Oklahoma State vs. Colorado betting picks and predictions

Oklahoma State +16.5 (-105)

While these teams have had completely different seasons to this point, this number is just too inflated for our expert to back the home favorite in this one. The market is certainly aware that the Buffaloes have to win this game, and that motivation is clearly priced into a line that was already going to be a bit high given what Colorado has done against the spread in conference play.

It might be a lost season for Oklahoma State, but the Cowboys offense looked like an explosive unit again last week against Texas Tech, as they put up a whopping 48 points in a losing effort. Much of this was due to the sudden resurgence of running back Ollie Gordon, who looked like his old self once again, racking up 156 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries.

What gave the Cowboys an added dimension on offense a week ago was the insertion of true freshman Maealiuaki Smith at quarterback. In his first game under center, Smith racked up over 400 yards passing and three total touchdowns, while completing 73% of his passes against Texas Tech. He should experience more success on Saturday against a Colorado defense that really struggles against the run, and has issues with getting off the field on third down.

While the Cowboys defense shouldn’t be expected to stop the Colorado offense, this is simply too many points for an offense that looks to have life again following a couple of games where they struggled to score. With that in mind, let’s take Oklahoma State +16.5 (-105) as our best bet for this game.

Over 65.5 (-110)

As mentioned previously in the point spread writeup, Oklahoma State seems to have found a spark on offense with Smith under center, and it certainly gives the Cowboys a more dynamic option that can also help out Gordon in the run game. This type of rushing attack is one that can succeed against Colorado’s poor run defense, as we just saw with Kansas a week ago.

On the other side, Shadeur Sanders and the Buffaloes offense will certainly have no issues generating explosive plays against a Cowboys defense that is 111th in success rate allowed, 118th in early downs EPA and 122nd in points per drive on the season. All signs point to this game being a shootout given the profile of both teams.

There is a real possibility for the Cowboys to keep this game within the number, and if they do, it will involve plenty of fireworks. Therefore, the over is the only way our expert can look in this matchup.
