The Philadlephia Phillies struck first in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Braves, but Atlanta delivered the final push to secure the win.
Austin Riley hit a three-run home run off Jhoan Duran in the bottom of the eighth inning, to take the lead 5-3, leaving the Phillies with three outs to try and comeback, but they ultimately fell short.
Now, all eyes turn to Game 2, with the Phillies' season on the line.
Cristopher Sanchez started the 2026 season red-hot, pitching 50 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. He wrapped the regular season with a 18-7 record, 2.91 ERA, and a career high 231 strikeouts. The Braves are known to struggle against left-handed pitchers, and Sanchez will need to bring the heat if the Phillies want a chance to make this a three-game series.
After a rough start with the San Francisco Giants, the Braves acquired right-handed pitcher Tyler Mahle at the trade deadline. He quickly found his rhythm and has developed into a leader in the Braves' rotation. In September, he recorded a 2.63 ERA and 16 strikeouts over 24.0 innings. He will take the mound on Wednesday, and after dominating the Phillies in back-to-back September matchups, the Phillies know they will need to be at their best to compete.
