The Philadelphia Flyers surprised quite a few people across the NHL landscape last season when they fell just four points short of a playoff spot, but this team has a lot of work to do before it is viewed as a legitimate contender.
Philly started the season strong, but a seven-game losing streak in late March and early April saw the team fall out of the playoff picture.
This season, the Flyers enter the campaign with Calder Trophy favorite Matvei Michkov on the roster, and the dynamic winger projects to provide the offensive flair this team has lacked for years.
The Flyers finished 27th of 32 teams in goals scored and ranked 18th in goals allowed last season, so they did not excel on either side of the puck. They did have 12 players reach double-digit goals, but their top goalscorer, Travis Konecny, found the net 33 times.
Philly needs a lot to go right in order to make progress on last season's sixth-placed finish in the Metropolitan Division. Michkov needs to produce early and often, Ivan Fedotov will have to become a solid backup goalie to Sam Ersson, and at least some of the team's young forwards must find the net more often.
And, combative head coach John Tortorella needs to effectively motivate his players instead of alienating them.
Let's look at the Flyers' odds ahead of what projects to be a rebuilding year in the City of Brotherly Love.
