The Philadelphia 76ers' odds to win the 2024/25 NBA Championship have doubled since the start of the season as a result of the team's 1-6 record.
Philly entered the season among the favorites at +800, but their odds have moved to +1400 to go all the way after just seven games.
The team is currently tied for last in the Eastern Conference with the Milwaukee Bucks. Philly lost to the Bucks by 15 on opening night and has also suffered defeats to the Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns - the Sixers' one win was against the Indiana Pacers.
The Sixers have not had 2022/23 NBA MVP Joel Embiid on the floor at all as he dealt with a knee injury and then got suspended for three games. Offseason free agent signing Paul George did not play in the first five games as a result of a knee injury he suffered in the preseason.
Through seven games in head coach Nick Nurse's second season at the helm, the team ranks in the bottom five league-wide in points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game, fouls committed per game, field goal percentage and field goal attempts per game. They're also in the bottom 10 in strength of schedule and three-point percentage.
The one thing the Sixers do at an elite level is get to the free-throw line. They attempt the third-most foul shots per game (28.0) but make just 74.5 percent of them, which is the ninth-lowest percentage in the NBA.
In terms of play style, Philly has posted up at the fourth-lowest rate in the league, which is a stark contrast to how they usually play with Embiid on the floor. They're running pick-and-roll plays with the third-highest frequency thanks to the duo of Tyrese Maxey and Andre Drummond, and they're in the top five in isolation play frequency.
Maxey has carried a heavy load this season, averaging 23.6 shots per game over a league-high 39.7 minutes per game, but he's only shooting a hair above 40 percent overall and has hit just 28.6 percent of his threes on 11.0 attempts per game.
George has made things easier through two games with averages of 16.5 points on 47.8 percent shooting with 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals, but the team is 0-2 with him in the lineup.
In its next four games, Philly faces the Los Angeles Lakers on the road before a homestand against the Charlotte Hornets, New York Knicks and currently undefeated Cleveland Cavaliers. The Lakers, Hornets and Knicks are all currently .500 or below.
Embiid's first game back will be the Knicks game on the opening night of the 2024 NBA Cup, which the Sixers are +1400 joint-sixth favorites to win.
