Pepperdine (13-21, 4-14 WCC) goes up against No. 21 Saint Mary’s (27-4, 17-1 WCC) in the West Coast Conference Tournament semifinal on Monday night.
Pepperdine is coming off an upset victory over Santa Clara on Sunday night in which they were 15.5-point underdogs, and are now two wins away from an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after finishing third-to-last in the conference standings.
But the Waves will have to go through conference 1-seed Saint Mary’s, the clear-cut best team in the West Coast Conference this regular season, to get there.
The Gaels went 17-1 in conference this year, their only loss coming vs. San Francisco 65-64 on January 23. Monday night will mark their first WCC Tournament game having received a bye to the semifinal.
Saint Mary’s is hoping to advance to the conference tournament final for a fourth-straight year and win back-to-back titles for the first time in school history.
