It's a desperate must-win in Ann Arbor for both teams as Penn State and Michigan remain winless in Big Ten play (Michigan 0-2, Penn State 0-3).
Michigan is working through a transitional phase under new head coach Kyle Whittingham and offense coordinator Jason Beck as they work to find their rhythm with quarterback Bryce Underwood. Despite offensive troubles, the Michigan Wolverines have been exceptional on the defensive side of the field. Michigan leads the Big Ten in total defense with just 241.4 yards allowed per game, and 3.9 yards allowed per play.
Penn State enters the matchup following a brutal White Out loss to USC. The Nittany Lions defense has consistently struggled against the run and their already thin linebacker room took a devastating blow against USC, losing linebacker Alex Tatsch to a season-ending injury.
The concerns for Penn State don't stop there. The team faces a major red-zone problem, sitting 17th in the conference and 78th national in red-zone touchdowns, a weakness they must fix if they want to salvage their season in Ann Arbor.
