The Philadelphia 76ers signed star wing Paul George to a four-year, $211 million contract in the offseason to complement Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, and the veteran starts his 15th NBA season and makes his Sixers debut against the Phoenix Suns on November 4.
George's team debut was delayed after he suffered a minor knee injury in the preseason that held him out of Philly's first five games, during which the Sixers went 1-4. Philly enters Monday night's game in Arizona sitting 14th in the Eastern Conference, above only the Milwaukee Bucks.
In addition to George missing the first five games, 2022/23 NBA MVP Embiid has not played yet this season either as he also deals with knee soreness.
Injuries to the Sixers' two stars has put an extra burden on Maxey so far this season. He leads the league by averaging 41.0 minutes per game, and he is scoring 29.8 points per game on just 38.5 percent shooting.
Only two of his teammates - Kelly Oubre and Caleb Martin - are averaging over 10.0 points per game. The usual starting lineup - Maxey, Kyle Lowry, Oubre, Martin and Andre Drummond - is mostly made of decent role players whereas George is a bona fide star.
George, even at 34 years old, is arguably the best version of the three-and-D player in the modern NBA. He has finished in the top five of Defensive Player of the Year voting twice, has been named to an All-Defensive team four times, and is a nine-time All-Star.
For his career, he averages 20.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals on 38.5 percent three-point shooting. He averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 41.3 percent three-point shooting last season with the Los Angeles Clippers, and he played over 70 games for the first time since 2018/19.
Before we find out whether PG is the missing piece to finally take the Sixers past the second round of the playoffs, let's take a look at his odds for his Philly debut against the Suns on November 4.
