2025 Oscars Best Director Odds

One of the more competitive races at the 97th Academy Awards is expected to be Best Director.

Let's break down the latest odds to win the award come March 2.

A couple precursor awards show that it’s one of two men who could bring home the Oscar for Best Director on March 2. 

The current favorite at -138 is Sean Baker, who directed, produced, edited, and wrote Anora. With a couple big wins in guild award shows, Anora is now a heavy -350 favorite to win Best Picture.

Baker has the opportunity to make real history at the Academy Awards. He could realistically become the first person to win four Oscars in the same night since Walt Disney in 1953. He would be the first person to ever win four Oscars in the same night for the same movie.

Baker through Anora is nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Director. He is the favorite in three of the four categories, and is just +130 to take home best Film Editing.

The major precursor win for Baker in directing was taking home the DGA Award for Directorial Achievement in Feature Film. Only eight times ever has the winner of the DGA not gone on to win Best Director at the Oscars, and it hasn’t happened since 2020 (Sam Mendes won the DGA for 1917, but Bong Joon-ho won the Oscar for Parasite).

Despite all of that, The Brutalist director Brady Corbet is certainly not out of this race, as the odds indicate. Corbet picked up a big win on February 16 as he took home the Best Director prize at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTAs). It was Corbet’s second signature win after being awarded Best Director – Motion Picture at the Golden Globes in January.

It is mainly a two-horse race between Corbet and Baker as to who will go home with the hardware on March 2.

Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), and Caralie Fargeat (The Substance) are also nominated, but are considered long shots to win Best Director.
