The Ohio State Buckeyes enter the 2024 College Football season with plenty of returning stars and a new quarterback.
Ohio State players, coaches and fans will hope this is the year they can get back on top of their rivalry with Michigan while competing for the National Championship.
The Buckeyes have not beaten Michigan since 2019. Michigan's 42-27 win that year ended seven consecutive seasons of Ohio State wins in their annual matchup.
Ohio State returns its top running back, second-leading receiver and plenty of defensive playmakers while also having one of the nation's best transfer classes. While fans may be looking forward to the Nov. 30th showdown at home against Michigan, this team faces a difficult schedule before then.
The newly-expanded 12-team Playoff provides a little breathing room since teams will not feel as much pressure in each game, but a team as good as this Ohio State squad will aim to prove itself as one of the nation's best every week.
With Ohio State kicking off its 2024 season on Saturday, August 31st against Akron, let's take a look at the key preseason odds for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State enters the 2024 College Football season as one of six teams with a regular season total wins line of 10.5. The Buckeyes join Georgia, Liberty, Notre Dame, Oregon and Texas in that category.
The high wins line is more of an endorsement of the Buckeyes' talent as opposed to being an indictment of the team's schedule. Ohio State faces one of the nation's toughest slates with Oregon on the road, Nebraska at home, Penn State on the road, and Michigan at home all scheduled.
The Buckeyes have the shortest odds to win the Big Ten in 2024. The only other teams shorter than 10/1 to win the conference are Oregon (+200), Penn State (+450) and Michigan (+600). Ohio State's showdown with Oregon on Oct. 12th could be a Big Ten Championship preview.
The transfer additions of safety Caleb Downs, running back Quinshon Judkins, and QB Will Howard provide the team with some extra top-end talent.
At -750, Ohio State has the shortest odds to make the first edition of the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. The closest team to the Buckeyes in the market is Georgia (-600).
Along with Ohio State and Georgia, only Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Oregon and Penn State have shorter odds to make the CFP than to miss out.
Ohio State has the second-shortest odds to win the 2024 National Championship, trailing only +280 Georgia.
Pairing transfer acquisition Judkins with returning RB TreVeyon Henderson gives Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day arguably the nation's best backfield, returning WR Emeka Egbuka and true freshman Jeremiah Smith can be a dangerous duo for Howard to target, and adding Downs to a defense that is bringing back Denzel Burke, Jack Sawyer and JT Tuimoloau makes the unit even more formidable.
