Sunday in the NHL has a jam-packed slate with eight games throughout the day, culminating in a Pacific Division battle between the Vegas Golden Knights and Vancouver Canucks. Vegas closes out a four-game stretch of battling Western Canadian teams, and with a 1-2-0 record, they would like to finish this with a win.
Both teams are playing in their second game in as many nights, but with Vancouver being home for both it will be interesting to see how this powerhouse Vegas team battles through fatigue as they try and secure the Pacific Division crown.
The Golden Knights have had yet another successful season, but they still have work to do if they want to claim the Pacific Division crown.
With six games to go, Vegas has a three-point lead over the Los Angeles Kings, and a seven-point advantage over the Edmonton Oilers. Each game counts, and a victory could go a long way.
Vancouver still has a slim chance at earning a playoff spot, but their opponent is a real threat. Vegas has a group that can surpass travel and lack of rest when they need a win. They are filled with veterans and elite talent that should be able to carry them against a weaker team.
Recent trends would suggest that this could be a low scoring game, but that is expected to change on Sunday night.
Before Saturday, Vancouver was coming off of two games in which they scored just one goal. Meanwhile, Vegas has scored just seven regulation goals in their last four games.
However, this matchup presents ample opportunity for goals on both sides, particularly with the Canucks scoring six against the Ducks last time out.
While Vegas hasn’t been filling the net lately, they are still one of the most-threatening offensive teams in the NHL. They are sixth in the NHL averaging 3.3 goals per game. Vancouver will have their hands full against this elite team, as they are in the bottom half in goals against.
For the better part of a month, Vancouver has found success offensively. In 12 games, they have accumulated 45 goals (3.75 per game). This is an impressive run of form that they should be able to carry into this game. Vegas could be facing fatigue, and have not been a stalwart defensively as it is.
In Jake Debrusk’s first season with Vancouver, he has accumulated 24 goals, which is second on the team. He has had to step up as an offensive weapon for the Canucks and that won’t change in this one, especially as his team may be down often throughout the game.
He is also third in the team in shots with 159, and has surpassed 1.5 shots in four of his last five games. DeBrusk will likely be carrying much of the burden as usual, trying to drive offense for his team. Even if he doesn’t score, he should end up with 2+ shots.
