Thursday’s NHL action promises to throw up a great battle between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes.
For the past few years, Toronto and Carolina have been menacing teams in the Eastern Conference, and this season is no different.
Both are in competitive battles for not only their respective divisions, but the conference itself, and this is a great test for each side.
While this should be must-watch hockey, there may not be a plethora of goals scored. This should have a playoff-like atmosphere and intensity, which usually translates to low-scoring results.
The Maple Leafs and Hurricanes have each been elite in terms of keeping the puck out of the net. Toronto is currently fifth in goals against average with 2.45, while Carolina is 11th at 2.63.
They both have great offensive weaponry, but their style of play this season has not resulted in constant offensive shootouts as they’ve both been in before.
Toronto has been incredible this season, and are truly looking like a different group. They are extremely well rounded with a combination of star talent and depth, and have been exceeding at all ends of the ice.
Yes, Carolina gives them a tall task, especially on the road, but Toronto has shown all season they can compete with anyone, which is proven by a 27-13-2 record.
Whether people believe in them or not, they have outperformed 27 other teams so far this season, including the Hurricanes. If they don’t win this one outright, the game should finish within one goal.
For the first half of the season, William Nylander was easily Toronto’s MVP. Captain Auston Matthews struggled with injury, Mitch Marner was not scoring as many big-time goals, and John Tavares just wasn’t as dynamic as him. Although in the past few games Nylander hasn’t produced.
However, this is a major test for the Maple Leafs, as they are on the road against a team who is expected to contend. Nylander has shown time and time again that he can show up in big games and moments, and his team will need him in this one.
He looks capable of getting on the board at least once with a goal or an assist.
