The St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets close out what has been a phenomenal series within the Western Conference, with Game 7 at the Canada Life Centre.
It has been a back and forth series, and it all comes down to this final battle. We have seen each team show flashes of pure dominance, but who will be able to step up in this winner-take-all battle?
Winnipeg had an incredible regular season, winning the Presidents' Trophy with 56 wins and 116 points.
That pure dominance has not exactly translated to playoffs, as they are now 3-3 against an opponent that had 20 less points than them. This may be their last chance to prove they are a Stanley Cup contender.
Before the series started, if you were to give St Louis the option of being in Game 7, they would take it every time. They are on the road in this one, but momentum is in their favor.
Who will win the final game of Round One? Here is our expert Blues vs. Jets prediction.
Goals have come in abundance in this series. Five of the six games so far have gone over, with the Jets and Blues combining for a total of 41 goals in six games (6.83 per game). These offensive results have also come from both sides, showing each team has high scoring capabilities.
While Game 7’s typically come with a low-scoring and physical presence, I think we see the same outcome we have seen all series.
Each goaltender is highly competent, but their consistent play of the regular season has been thrown out the window. At this point, it is clear that there are too many weapons on each side that can help fill the net.
The St. Louis Blues came into this series as the major underdogs against the Presidents' Trophy winners, and while they remain underdogs for Game 7, they have shown to be an extreme threat. This is the case for many different factors, and I see them continuing this status and earning a major win.
St. Louis has shown no struggles in scoring against the likely Vezina Trophy winner, and potential MVP of the entire NHL in Connor Hellebuyck. This success must continue in Game 7, but there is no reason for this group to show signs of struggle and intimidation.
Momentum is currently in their favor, as they have won three of the past four games, both on the road and at home. Not only are the Blues hanging, but they are dictating the series to a certain extent. I expect this confidence to remain.
To add insult to injury, the Winnipeg Jets could be without forward Mark Scheifele. This is not an insignificant loss, which was already proven in Game 6 when he missed that one. If he is out for this game, it will only add to the mountain that Winnipeg must climb.
Gabriel Vilardi is a young and important forward for the Winnipeg Jets, and is increasing his value and skill as time goes on. Vilardi missed each of the first four games of the series, and it was clear he was a missing piece for the Jets.
In his third game of the series, I expect Vilardi to come out flying in what is also his second playoff game on home ice. This will also be more important if elite forward Mark Scheifele is out with injury.
In the two games he has played, the dynamic forward has accumulated 4 shots (2 per game). I expect this trend to continue in Game 7. This is especially true in what could be a high-scoring game, and a game that Winnipeg could easily find themselves trailing in.
