Philadelphia Flyers vs. New Jersey Devils preview: Odds, picks, predictions, injuries, TV & more

The first of two 2024 NHL Stadium Series games features the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils squaring off under the lights at MetLife Stadium on Saturday night.

Saturday’s matchup between Philadelphia and New Jersey is a crucial contest in the Metropolitan Division. The Flyers have played two more games (55 to 53) and own a seven-point lead over the Devils for third place, but New Jersey can cut its deficit to five with a win.

If the Devils can prevail this weekend, the race for third place in the Metropolitan will become very interesting.

Philadelphia Flyers vs. New Jersey Devils predictions

Philadelphia Flyers +125 ML

The Flyers are without question the value play on Saturday. They are playing stellar hockey right now, with four wins in their last five games and at least a point in five straight.

Philadelphia has not lost in regulation since January 27. While Philly’s offense has been contributing to a decent extent of late, goalie Samuel Ersson’s return to form has been the catalyst for their strong run.

Ersson (15-9-4, 2.55 goals-against average) has allowed only nine goals in four starts this month, making 92 total saves in the process.

Since the turn of the calendar to 2024, the Devils have not won more than two games in a row. They have lost three of their last five games and five of their last eight.

Philadelphia and New Jersey have faced each other twice this season, with both encounters going to overtime and the road team winning each time.

New Jersey prevailed 4-3 on November 30 before Philadelphia got the job done 3-2 on December 19. At worst for the Flyers this looks like an entirely even matchup, so they have great value as underdogs.

Under 6.0 Goals +100

This season’s first head-to-head matchup featured seven goals (six in regulation), but neither team had its current goalie in net at that time. The rematch was 2-2 going into overtime and Saturday’s showdown should more closely resemble that most recent meeting.

In addition to Ersson’s stellar play, Nico Daws of the Devils has been impressive. In three February starts he is sporting a 1.69 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage.

The recent history of NHL outdoor games is also worth noting. In this Stadium Series, the three most recent scores have been 3-1, 3-2 and 4-1.

Of the 13 games all time, eight have produced six goals or fewer.

In the NHL’s Winter Classic, a whopping 13 of 15 installments have resulted in no more than six goals – including 12 of the last 13. Another low-scoring outdoor affair is likely in the cards.

Travis Konecny Over 0.5 Goals +160

Philadelphia forward Travis Konecny is a good bet to be an anytime goal scorer on Saturday.

Konecny leads the Flyers with 26 goals this season and he has lit the lamp in four of the last five games.

The 26-year-old is generating plenty of chances, too, with at least three shots on goal in five consecutive contests – including four in each of the past two.
