The NHL is back in full swing after a 13-day break for the 4 Nations Face-Off, and the New Jersey Devils and Nashville Predators hit the ice for their second game in as many nights. These teams kicked off the return differently, as the Predators secured a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche, and the Devils dropped a 4-2 loss to the Dallas Stars.
Nashville is near the bottom of the standings, buf this veteran-filled lineup will want to close out the final stretch of the season strong. As for New Jersey, they are in the thick of a tight race in the Metropolitan Division standings. With that being said, there is no reason to expect these teams to treat this matchup lightly.
To get you set for what should be a great Sunday matchup between the New Jersey Devils and Nashville Predators, we have provided our expert Devils vs. Predators predictions.
New Jersey already has a regulation loss coming out of the NHL break, and will quickly need to turn that around. Starting with two losses does nothing to build momentum, and momentum is what they need if they want to climb up the standings in the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference. An urgent and hungry group is therefore expected to hit the ice today.
New Jersey has performed much better than Nashville, and as we are 55+ games into the season, we have a pretty clear idea of these teams’ potential. The way these two stack up against each other, New Jersey is much stronger. The Devils (3.0 goals per game) score much more than the Predators (2.6 goals per game), and they defend even better as they are second in NHL goals against average (2.31).
New Jersey is an energetic team with lots of young talent and exciting stars, who I believe will help generate many forms of success in this game. The road team in the New Jersey Devils can take the victory in this one.
Jack Hughes has been an absolute star for New Jersey, which comes as no surprise. However, the dynamic forward was not able to find much success in the 4 Nations Face-Off. This player holds himself to a high standard, and while it may not have been NHL action, I think he will still be looking to show his dominance again quickly.
He has already donw that right off the bat on his return to action as he had two goals in last night’s loss to Dallas. Hughes now has 26 goals on the season, and in a game where they will need him to stay hot and be a force, he can find the back of the net yet again.
Even without superstar goaltender Jacob Markstrom, New Jersey has proven that their defensive strength comes from their team structure and accountability. They are second in the NHL with a 2.31 goals against average, and have been a nightmare overall for teams to score a ton against. A very low scoring team like Nashville should have issues finding any kind of success.
New Jersey will lead the way in the scoring department in this game, but they have not often run away with extreme goal totals, nor do the Predators often allow that to happen. Therefore, expect a low-scoring finish here.
