After it looked like the 2024 Stanley Cup Final was going to be the first sweep in 26 years, the Edmonton Oilers have won back-to-back games over the Florida Panthers to force Game 6.
Will the Oilers force Game 7, or will the Panthers finally hoist their first Stanley Cup in franchise history?
As the series shifts back to Alberta, we’re here to answer that with our best Panthers vs. Oilers Game 6 predictions.
Although the Panthers have never been able to hoist the Cup, that certainly doesn’t mean that they’re not experienced in this position.
They were just in the Stanley Cup Final a season ago but fell to the Vegas Golden Knights, who won their first Cup in franchise history.
With the shoe on the other foot, it’s time for them to finally close things out without the distractions of South Beach in their face.
The Panthers were also willing to admit that back in Game 4 when they had the potential to pull off the sweep, the moment got to them.
The Stanley Cup was in the building and they had flown dozens of friends and family all the way up to Edmonton for the occasion, and we all saw how that turned out. Then, heading home brought that same pressure back with them.
Now, they get to leave it all behind and be more prepared for what can be considered a mulligan of Game 4. That’s also how goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky should feel about the matchup, as he was ultimately pulled in that contest.
With that in mind, we would also suggest taking over the total. The fact that oddsmakers are still providing a line of 5.5 goals is quite valuable after we’ve seen the past three games finish with totals of seven, nine and eight total goals.
It could be worth taking the Over, but for some plus-money action, we’re focusing on Florida finally closing things out.
Speaking of the Panthers pouncing at this opportunity, that should also mean that captain Aleksander Barkov finally looks like his usual self. After all, he’s been among the favorites for the Conn Smythe Trophy since the Eastern Conference Finals.
The captain is considered the best defensive forward in the NHL, which is a primary reason as to why the Panthers were favored over the Oilers heading into the Stanley Cup Final.
Having a center that can even remotely match up with Connor McDavid is all but impossible, but Barkov has proven to be the exception for Florida this series.
Of course, Barkov is just as proficient offensively as well. He’s lightning quick with great hands, which is why he’s racked up 21 points this postseason. He may not be setting records like McDavid, but any comparisons to him are simply futile.
We’re getting plus-money odds here as well, and that’s primarily due to the fact that Barkov is more than capable of finding the back of the net himself.
However, even if he does, we’d still expect him to send out a helper. After all, that’s exactly what he did in Game 3 in Edmonton, recording both a goal and an assist.
